Mental Health Month: A message from AUCD's MH SIG

As we celebrate mental health month, we invite you to participate in AUCD's Special Interest Group on Mental Health Aspects of I/DD. Our goal is to ensure that the mental health needs of children and adults with IDD-MH are fully recognized within the disability community and that they are effectively addressed.

This Twitter chat will engage the overall disability community in a conversation on what wellness means and encourage sharing of helpful resources. Based on what is shared, AUCD's National Center on Disability in Public Health will create a brief on health education, policy and practice resources. Our goal is to make this brief available by the ADA Anniversary at the end of July.

Active Leadership in the Tucson Community (Arizona LEND)

What a bittersweet end to a fantastic traineeship for the University of Arizona LEND cohort! Over the past nine months, Arizona LEND has been involved in some great Leadership Projects designed to step outside of their comfort zones and serve people with disabilities and complex medical needs in Tucson. From neighborhood playgrounds to customized websites, the trainees in this cohort came together to make the most of their skill sets. Here are some of the highlights.

Christine Brown, Columbus Business First 40 under 40 Honoree! (OH Nisonger LEND)

Christine Brown, Nisonger Center LEND Self-Advocate Faculty Member and Clinical Research Assistant, has been selected as a Columbus Business First 40 under 40 honoree! In its 27th year, Christine was chosen for her outstanding career achievements and impressive community service, among 378 nominations.

Dr. Luc Lecavalier receives Joan N. Huber Faculty Fellow Award (OH UCEDD)

Dr. Luc Lecavalier, Professor of Psychology and Nisonger Center faculty member at The Ohio State University; received the Joan N. Huber Faculty Fellow Award for Excellence in the Social and Behavioral Sciences for 2019. This fellowship program recognizes some of the very strongest scholars in the social and behavioral sciences disciplines. Each year the college awards no more than three fellowships to full professors nominated by department chairs and school directors in the division of social and behavioral sciences.

Kansas LEND Receives Diversity & Inclusion Award

Kansas LEND was honored to accept the University of Kansas Medical Center Executive Vice Chancellor award for Diversity & Inclusion in April. LEND was nominated by Alice Zhang, LEND Postdoctoral Fellow and was supported by our community partner Families Together, Inc. The work to expand understanding, acceptance, inclusion and belonging on our KUMC campus and beyond continues. LEND Audiology Trainees Learn Strategies for Early Diagnosis at EHDI 2019

The 18th annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting welcomed nearly 1,000 diverse stakeholders on March 4-6 in Chicago, IL. The EHDI Meeting brings together those who work in state-based EHDI Programs, assist in EHDI efforts on the federal level, provide screening, diagnostic, and early intervention support at the state level to young children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families, and deaf and family advocates. The Meeting is organized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Hands and Voices, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Health Resources and Services Administration, and National Center for Hearing Assessment & Management at Utah State University.

AOD Commissioner Julie Hocker Visits the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND)

On a two-day visit to Tennessee, Julie Hocker, Commissioner of the U.S. Administration on Disability, met with Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) leadership, faculty, trainees, and Tennessee Developmental Disabilities Network partners. Hocker visited at the suggestion of Lance Robertson, Assistant Secretary for Aging at the Administration for Community Living, who travelled to Tennessee in January and returned enthusiastic about the collaborative relationships within the state.

Former Disability Advocacy LEND fellow in 2017-2018

While Tourette Syndrome was once classified as a rare disorder, studies now show that 1 in 160 school aged children will have Tourette Syndrome or a tic disorder. Six in seven youth with Tourette will have another mental, behavioral or developmental disorder.

Update to the Administration for Community Living's Statement of Organization, Functions, and Delegations of Authority

A planned reorganization within the Administration for Community living (ACL) was note in the Federal Register on May 9th. The goals of the reorganization are to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the organization; strengthen infrastructure; and improve the connections between the organization and its stakeholders, grantees and consumers at the national, state and local levels. AUCD and other members of the disability community have engaged in efforts to learn more and understand the possible impacts.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) LEND Self-advocate Trainees Learn from and Demonstrate the Benefits of Inclusive Environments

The definition and purpose of disability inclusion is to be sure that everyone has the same opportunities to participate in every aspect of life to the best of their abilities and desires. In the 2018-19 academic year, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Consortium LEND (VCL) Training Program through the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center welcomed two self-advocates to their cohort of trainees for the first time.

This white paper approaches family involvement from the perspective of the family discipline itself, and the ongoing paradigm shift in family-centered care--from fringe to fabric. This document includes a summary of the history of family involvement in the LEND network and a series of 8 individual handouts which detail the definition, need, benefits, resources and strategies associated with each type of family involvement.
