Leadership Transitions at the UCEDD in Bronx NY

As of January 2019 Joanne Siegel, LCSW became Co-Director (previously Associate Director) and Karen Bonuck, PhD became Director (previously Co-Director) of the UCEDD, which is based in the Rose F. Kennedy Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (RFK CERC). Ms. Siegel, who is a Principal Associate (faculty) in the Department of Pediatrics at Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center moves to this new leadership role after 40+ years at RFK CERC.

New Impact Issue Examines Inclusive K-8 Education (MN UCEDD)

Historically, students with the most significant cognitive disabilities were often taught only functional skills in our K-12 schools - how to do self-care, tell time, use money, carry out routine daily tasks. But several laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) and the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA), have affirmed that students with disabilities have the right to access the grade-level curriculum. Today, we know how much more students can learn when provided with the opportunity, and growing numbers of families, educators, and students are advocating for higher expectations and a more inclusive educational experience.

Rural Institute Offers Education and Support to Advocates (MT UCEDD)

The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities aims to educate policy makers about how their decisions impact children and adults with disabilities. One way to do so is to provide leadership education and support to local advocates like Jackie Mohler of Family Outreach in Helena, Montana. Jackie recently represented Montana at the AUCD Leadership Academy.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Researcher Shares Largest Neuroimaging Dataset on Math Development

Vanderbilt University neuroscientist and VKC Investigator James R. Booth is making available the largest known neuroimaging dataset on math development. His goal in doing so is to support the work of other researchers across the world who are working to understand how arithmetic skills develop in childhood.

AUCD 2019 Gala: A Fantastic Night Celebrating Leadership in Civil Rights

The AUCD For All Gala: Celebrating Leadership in Civil Rights was a great success with close to 300 people joining AUCD and its network to highlight the importance of advancing civil rights and social justice for children and adults with disabilities. We are grateful to the evening's honorees for their dedication in championing the rights of everyone to realize a life of fulfillment and meaning. Call for Art Submission: Disability and Shame (HI UCEDD/LEND)

Genesis Leong University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Center on Disability Studies

The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal is issuing a Call for Art Submissions to be included in the special forum on the subject of shame and disability, broadly conceived. It is hoped that through critical discourse addressing the historical and current contexts, contributing factors, effects, and responses to shame, greater understanding of this phenomena will diminish discrimination and violence.
