Statewide Transition Capacity Building and Coordination with Texas Workforce Commission and Local Educational Agencies (TX UCEDD)
Individuals with disabilities face challenges in their transition from school to adult life, especially in the transition from school to employment. Federal legislation requires local and state education agencies to work with the state vocational rehabilitation agency to facilitate a smooth transition from school to employment. Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and Texas Education Agency (TEA) have developed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to help guide the two agencies for collaborations.

Marcia Montague, Ph.D., Affiliated Faculty Speaks at Voices of Impact 2019 (TX UCEDD)
Stepping up to help first-generation students be successful Dr. Montague spoke about the first generation undergraduate students. At Texas A&M University approximately 25% of the undergraduate student population are first generation college students. The 6 year graduation rate of this group of students lags about 10% behind that. Research shows that frist generation students come from low income or working class families, doubt their ability to graduate in the timeline, doubt their ability to be able to afford their education. They are often less involved in High School and work off campus.

Telecom Toolbox Can Help VR Counselors Support the Employment Goals of Rural Consumers (MT UCEDD/LEND)
Since the recession, employment rates for people with disabilities has not increased at the same rates as those for people without disabilities. In rural areas, these disparities are more pronounced: in most rural areas, employment rates for people with disabilities decreased significantly while rates for people without disabilities in those same areas increased.

ARMS of Advocacy: Arkansas and Mississippi LEND
The Arkansas (AR) and Mississippi (MS) LEND program engenders a diverse, interdisciplinary culture of growth and learning in the disability field. Composed of trainees and faculty from 16 health care disciplines, we conduct quarterly solution-focused learning sessions with a local family who has a child with a disability. Trainees have the opportunity to interview each family two times and collaborate in inter-disciplinary teams to find solutions to challenges the family and child may be encountering. A third meeting with each family culminates in trainees presenting their findings.

Einstein Adds Curriculum on Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (NY UCEDD)
Thanks to funding from the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD), The Rose F Kennedy UCEDD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine is developing a special curriculum for medical students geared to treating adults with IDD. The grant, part of the AADMD's National Curriculum Initiative in Developmental Medicine (NCIDM), seeks to address educational gaps in medical schools in order to reduce health disparities for this population.

University of Cincinnati UCEDD's Director Receives Advocacy Achievement Award
Ilka Riddle, PhD and Director of the University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCCEDD) was recently awarded the Advocacy Achievement Award from Cincinnati Children's Hospital at the 8th Annual Faculty Awards Ceremony at Cincinnati Children's.

Dr. Eric Kurtz Appointed Executive Director of the Center for Disabilities (SD UCEDD/LEND)
Eric Kurtz, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as the Executive Director of the Center for Disabilities at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Dr. Kurtz was selected following a nation-wide search. He has a strong record of leadership in various capacities, most recently as the Helmsley Charitable Trust's Interim Director for Rural Healthcare where he spearheaded initiatives and partnerships to improve access to quality healthcare across the Upper Midwest.

SALT at Mailman Center: Empowering adults with disabilities to take the first steps towards self-advocacy (FL UCEDD/LEND)
"Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world". This quote by Howard Zinn has always resonated with me because it's rooted in the principle that even if we start small, efforts can domino effect into something much greater. I am proud to be an Audiology extern at the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development because we believe in opportunities for ALL people, including those with disabilities.

2019-2021 Learn the Signs. Act Early. Ambassador Cohort Selected
The 2019-2021 Act Early Ambassador cohort has been recently selected and will begin their term at the annual Act Early Ambassador Training at CDC Headquarters in Atlanta on April 30th and May 1st, 2019. These Ambassadors will join Act Early Ambassadors representing the 12 states currently in the middle of their 2018-2021 term in their role as liaisons to the Act Early Initiative.

The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities Partners to Offer Transition Programs for High School Students with Disabilities (MT UCEDD)

Cindy Thomas Appointed Interim Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (MA UCEDD)
Cindy Thomas, M.S., C.R.C was recently appointed Interim Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI). ICI, based at Boston Children's Hospital and the University of Massachusetts Boston, recently celebrated 50 years of promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. Ms. Thomas has been an integral part of the ICI for over 30 years and has played a significant role in its growth. Most recently, she has served as the Associate Director, as well as continuing her long-term role as lead for the Employment Services and Capacity Building team.
