Dr. Eric Kurtz Appointed Executive Director of the Center for Disabilities (SD UCEDD/LEND)
Eric Kurtz, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as the Executive Director of the Center for Disabilities at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Dr. Kurtz was selected following a nation-wide search. He has a strong record of leadership in various capacities, most recently as the Helmsley Charitable Trust's Interim Director for Rural Healthcare where he spearheaded initiatives and partnerships to improve access to quality healthcare across the Upper Midwest.

SALT at Mailman Center: Empowering adults with disabilities to take the first steps towards self-advocacy (FL UCEDD/LEND)
"Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world". This quote by Howard Zinn has always resonated with me because it's rooted in the principle that even if we start small, efforts can domino effect into something much greater. I am proud to be an Audiology extern at the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development because we believe in opportunities for ALL people, including those with disabilities.

2019-2021 Learn the Signs. Act Early. Ambassador Cohort Selected
The 2019-2021 Act Early Ambassador cohort has been recently selected and will begin their term at the annual Act Early Ambassador Training at CDC Headquarters in Atlanta on April 30th and May 1st, 2019. These Ambassadors will join Act Early Ambassadors representing the 12 states currently in the middle of their 2018-2021 term in their role as liaisons to the Act Early Initiative.

The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities Partners to Offer Transition Programs for High School Students with Disabilities (MT UCEDD)

Cindy Thomas Appointed Interim Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (MA UCEDD)
Cindy Thomas, M.S., C.R.C was recently appointed Interim Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI). ICI, based at Boston Children's Hospital and the University of Massachusetts Boston, recently celebrated 50 years of promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. Ms. Thomas has been an integral part of the ICI for over 30 years and has played a significant role in its growth. Most recently, she has served as the Associate Director, as well as continuing her long-term role as lead for the Employment Services and Capacity Building team.

Advocacy is Making a Difference (SC UCEDD)

Think back to your education... did you ever have a class where you were able to learn about disabilities??? If so, that is incredible! If not, then you're like me. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate career, I have not had access to a disability-focused course. We had classes that included disabilities in their course and teaching, but never one that focused on what having a disability looks like, means, and what we, as social workers, can do to best serve clients.

Beyond the Walls: How Fellows at Boston Children's Go Beyond the Classroom (MA LEND)

The interdisciplinary nature of the LEND program gives a unique flavor to each and every week, giving a variety of perspectives to each issue discussed. At Boston Children's LEND program, the interdisciplinary nature is extended beyond the the walls fellows meet in each week. Whether meeting with state leaders for Title V programs, working with Community Based Organizations ("CBOs"), or researching pressing issues in developmental disabilities, fellows are constantly pushing their boundaries. By putting an emphasis on work outside of the "classroom", fellows have expanded their knowledge in a truly interdisciplinary fashion.

Helping Babies Beyond Their First Year: A Day of Learning (WI LEND)
In Milwaukee, WI, 100 infants die before reaching their first birthday. Infant mortality disproportionately affects more Black infants than White infants in Milwaukee due to a variety of social, medical, and other complex factors. The Strong Baby Sanctuary is a network of faith-based organizations that are addressing this multifaceted issue by engaging the community in education, healthcare, and wellness.

Jenness Roth Promoted to Associate Director at the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD)
Jenness Roth has been promoted to the position of Associate Director at the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Jenness brings over 20 years of experience to the position, including several years of management experience as the executive director of a statewide non-profit that serves people with developmental disabilities and their families.

New Early Intervention Training Program (Georgetown UCEDD)
The Georgetown UCEDD has added a new partnership and program to their interdisciplinary pre-service preparation and training activities called GEORGE (Graduate Education of Related Service Providers at Georgetown and George Washington Universities in Early Intervention). With support from a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Dr. Toby Long along with faculty from the GUCEDD, George Washington and Catholic Universities, has incorporated interdisciplinary pre-service program students into our existing Georgetown University Graduate Certificate in Early Intervention (GUCEI) Program.

The UCEDD at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Institute on Development and Disability hosted a community town hall to highlight transition resources available for families, professionals, and providers. This event was in partnership with Autism Speaks and Autism Society of Oregon, and included sponsorship from the Tiffany Foundation.

Verity Rodrigues, M.S., Ph.D., educational consultant and instructor in Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC/UCEDD/LEND) reatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (VKC TRIAD), has been selected to participate on the advisory board for the National Training Center on Mental Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (MHIDD).
