2017 recipients of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities (IA UCEDD)
The Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) is very proud to announce that Jessica Gallegos, Matthew O�Brien, PhD, BCBA-D and Caitlin Owens, MSW are the 2017 recipients of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities. The purpose of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities is to nurture in recipients a life-long commitment to leadership in developmental disabilities that will carry on Dr. Healy�s legacy for future generations. Dr. Healy, who passed away in April of 2012, was a world-renowned pediatrician and educator who devoted his life to caring for children with developmental disabilities. He served as the director of the Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa�s nationally designated University Center for Excellence on Disabilities, from 1977 until he retired in 1998.

Boston LEND Graduation (MA LEND)
The Boston LEND Faculty and Fellows celebrated the 2016-2017 LEND Fellows' Graduation with convocation speaker Valerie Bradley, President Emerita and co-founder of the Human Services Research Institute (HRSI). Also in attendance was the new ICI Director, Tom Sannicandro.

Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) LEND Trainees present final projects to New York State Department of Health
On April 27th, WIHD LEND trainees were in Albany, NY to present their research projects to the Department of Health and other stakeholders as part of their final project for the course "Seminar in Evidence-based Methods (SEBM)". In addition to 22 in-person trainees, two trainees from the University of Puerto Rico and two trainees from the U.S. Virgin Islands also participated via distance technology.

IN LEND and LEAH Programs Host Trainee Poster Session
The Riley Child Development Center (IN LEND) hosted the 7th annual MCH Poster session and professional networking reception on Friday, April 21, 2017. Trainees from both the IN LEND and LEAH programs shared their research and leadership projects. The posters were well received, with good discussions and future connections made!

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) CAC Chair at the Disability Policy Seminar
My name is John Shouse. I am the chair of the Community Advisory Council for the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND). I count myself very fortunate to have been able to attend the annual Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C., again this year, March 20-22, and to make visits to our Tennessee Congressional Delegation on Capitol Hill. As we chanted at the Seminar: "This is what democracy looks like."

SC LEND Year End Meeting
On April 27, the SC LEND trainees presented their research/ leadership projects to faculty and staff. Project topics included the effects on exercise on children with ADHD, screening for anemia in children with Down Syndrome, and working with families on how to provide language rich environments for their children. All in attendance were very impressed with the projects.

Pittsburgh LEND and ATN Collaboration
Dr. Paradiz is the director of a consultancy that provides technical assistance, training and strategic development to organizations and institutions that support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other disabilities. Dr. Paradiz is the founder of the ASPIE School for middle and high school students with autism. She met with the Pittsburgh LEND leadership, Family and Self-Advocate Trainees. Dr. Paradiz also gave a community presentation about her involvement in research for individuals with ASD co-sponsored by the Merck Family Advisory Committee and the Pittsburgh LEND. She provided a unique perspective about how families play a vital role in research in autism and examples of evidence-based and multidisciplinary approaches to supporting and treating autism.

Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports (FINDS) Survey

The 2017 FINDS survey aims is to learn more about the experiences of parents and family members who provide support to a family member with an intellectual or developmental disability. To participate, the caregiver must be 18 years or older and provide primary paid/unpaid and frequent support to a family member or friend with an intellectual or developmental disability living in the United States (and U.S. territories). This survey is not for direct support professionals�we need the perspective of family caregivers, paid or unpaid.

2016-17 MNLEND Fellow Publishes!
Jack Reagan, current 2016-17 MNLEND Fellow recently co-published a brief based on the FINDS 2010 data surveying family caregivers. The data he analyzed within the FINDS survey focused on the emotional and physical markers affecting family caregivers. These markers have both positive and negative association to their related outcomes for family caregivers.

MNLEND Alumna Publishes!
Last year, I was very fortunate to be a LEND Fellow at the University of Minnesota. I applied because I was embarking on my PhD dissertation in nursing and wanted to explore the experience of families of children who lived with severe autism. The LEND experience not only provided an in-depth education in neurodevelopmental disorders, but also the LEND staff helped me access families who would ultimately participate in my research. This research ultimately changed the way I understand families who live with a severe chronic condition such as severe autism.
