IHD-AzUCD Welcomes Dr. Kelly Roberts as New Executive Director
Dr. Kelly Roberts has worked in the disability, education, and health and human service fields for over 29 years. During this time she worked as a teacher in grades 6 through 12, researcher, AT specialist, postsecondary education instructor, and administrator. She has extensive experience working with individuals from multicultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds as well as with individuals with a broad range of disabilities.

Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TX UCEDD)
The Behavior Support Collaborative lead by Dr. Mack D. Burke in conjunction with the Center on Disability and Development in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University was awarded a catapult grant from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The purpose of the catapult grant (Improving Quality of Life Through a Culturally Responsive Lens: Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students At-Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders) is to improve the quality of life and well-being of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds who are at-risk of developing emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) by promoting school adjustment.

Four UCEDDs (TN, TX, MN, KY) Collaborate to Put Faith and Jobseekers with Disabilities to Work
A new manual outlines how faith communities can support members with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. The manual was spearheaded by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD) and its partners at the Human Development Institute (KY UCEDD), the Texas Center for Disability Studies (TX UCEDD), and the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD). All four UCEDDs facilitated the two-year Putting Faith to Work project as an activity of the National Collaborative on Faith and Disability.

Speech-Language Pathologist Screening of Sleep Problem Grant Awarded to Rose F. Kennedy Center (NY UCEDD/LEND)
This grant will pilot sleep problem screening by SLPs, using validated tools for sleep-disordered breathing and behavioral (insomnia-type) sleep problems. Focus groups will assess SLP and family experiences; screening tools will yield sleep problem prevalence. This grant, from the American Sleep Medicine Foundation, will be led by UCEDD Co-Director Karen Bonuck, PhD and Supervisor of Speech-Language Services, Nancy Tarshis, MA, MS. CCC-SLP.

UI Earns No. 1 Ranking in University Website Accessibility (IA UCEDD)
The University of Iowa ranks first in the nation in an assessment of how accessible its websites are to people with disabilities. UI topped the list of 140 American universities, according to rankings presented at an Educause conference poster session by Jon Gunderson of the Division of Disability Resources and Education Services at the University of Illinois - Champaign/Urbana.

2017 EHDI Meeting Scholarships for LEND Audiology Trainees
AUCD has made available six (6) scholarships of up to $500 each to support LEND audiology trainees in attending the in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting on February 26-28, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. All current LEND audiology trainees are eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to trainees from programs that do not currently receive supplemental funding and trainees that have not attended the EHDI Meeting in previous years. Application deadline: January 29, 2017.

21st Century Cures Act Signed into Law
On December 13, President Obama signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law. The law is a $6.3 billion omnibus health bill that includes $4.8 billion in funding for several major NIH medical research initiatives. It also funds opioid addiction prevention and treatment grants and makes some reforms to FDA regulations.

FA Olmstead Session (GA and IA UCEDD)
Earlier this fall Sue Jamieson, prominent civil rights lawyer and lead attorney in Olmstead v. L.C., travelled to Iowa to speak at the HousingIowa Conference about the history of the landmark Supreme Court decision and the importance of housing in community integration. The session also featured Iowa's Money Follows the Person coordinator Brooke Lovelace and program participant Monnie Hall, and was moderated by Caitlin Owens, who along with Brooke works for Iowa's UCEDD at the Center for Disabilities and Development. Sue is the Disability Law Project Co-Director at the University of Georgia's Institute on Human Development and Disability (one of Georgia's two UCEDDs).

Iowa UCEDD Capitalizes on Partnerships to Promote Employment First
Recent production of a two-part television series highlighting National Disability Employment Awareness Month combines the Iowa UCEDD's emphasis on promoting Employment First with its commitment to information dissemination. Entitled "The Power of Employment," the series aired on "Hello, It's Us!", a weekly Public Access Television program produced by the UCEDD dedicated to educating viewership about a variety of disability-related topics through the lens of community inclusion.

Oklahoma's New Portal Seeks to Help Thousands on Medicaid Waiver Waiting List (OK UCEDD/LEND)
The first phase of a new state portal that aims to improve online access to information about services and resources for those with disabilities in an easy-to-understand manner is expected to be up and running by the end of 2017.

"Learn the Signs. Act Early." Resources Now Available in Vietnamese
The "Learn the Signs. Act Early." Team is pleased to announce the completion of its project to translate and adapt the Milestone checklists, Milestones brochure, and tip sheets (How to Help Your Child & How to Talk to the Doctor) into Vietnamese. These materials were professionally translated and adapted in consultation with a small group of Vietnamese parents of young children and a group of Vietnamese subject matter experts.

AIR-P Network Activities
The Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P), led by Karen Kuhlthau, PhD, conducts research on evidence-based interventions to improve the physical health and well-being of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities, with an emphasis on underserved communities. Two key goals of the AIR-P network are to provide opportunities to develop collaborations and partnerships with clinicians and researchers and to support junior investigators in developing their research efforts to improve medical care of children with autism.
