Va-LEND Welcomes Second Generation Director

This past March, Jennifer Accardo, MD, officially stepped into her role as the new Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (Va-LEND) Director, a job previously held by her father, Pasquale Accardo, MD. Dr. Accardo is a pediatrician board certified in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.

IN LEND and LEAH Programs Host Trainee Poster Session
The Riley Child Development Center (IN LEND) hosted the 7th annual MCH Poster session and professional networking reception on Friday, April 21, 2017. Trainees from both the IN LEND and LEAH programs shared their research and leadership projects. The posters were well received, with good discussions and future connections made!

IN LEND Collaborates on Project to Develop Training for Family Leaders
The Riley Child Development Center is excited to share this free training that was guided by MCH leadership competencies. Indiana families now have access to a new web-based training which will help them build knowledge and skills in the area of family leadership! Building Family Leaders will give families access to the tools they need to be empowered to lead, advocate and engage as partners in the systems that serve their children. The idea for the Building Family Leaders modules was born during a statewide meeting of the Family Leadership Council.

Easter Seals Iowa Assistive Technology Center (AT) visited South Africa (IA UCEDD)
Tracy Keninger, Director of the Easter Seals Iowa Assistive Technology Center (AT) visited South Africa in March to provide consultation relating to implementation of new legislation that is similar to the Americans with Disabilities Act. During her week long stay, she visited several child care centers, residential facilities, and rehabilitation facilities for individuals with disabilities. She also spoke with many organizations, families, and individuals with disabilities regarding current challenges and needs. In response to the overwhelming lack of basic assistive technology to support mobility, activities of daily living, and recreation, Keninger will be returning to South Africa in August with a group of Occupational Therapy students and volunteers to design assistive technology and modify devices from locally available materials and supplies.

In-Home and Residential Long-Term Supports and Services for Persons with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (MN UCEDD)
The NIDILRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Community Living for People with Intellectual Disabilities (RTC/CL) (90RT5019) has released a report, In-Home and Residential Long-Term Supports and Services for Persons with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities: Status and Trends Through 2014.

Mailman Center Receives Grant for Women and their Babies (FL UCEDD/LEND)
The Mailman Center was awarded a one year grant in the amount of $223,000 from The Children's Trust. Julieta Hernandez, PhD, LCSW, Clinical Supervisor and Director of Social Work Programs and Douglene Jackson, PhD, OTR/L, LMT, Occupational Therapist & LEND Fieldwork Program Coordinator, will be leading this new project, The Wellness Outreach for Mothers and Babies (WOMB). This program will implement and evaluate an evidence-based intervention to address the social-emotional well-being of infants and mothers in high need Miami-Dade County communities.

New Online Traning Platform Enhances Living Well with a Disability Program (MT UCEDD/LEND)
RTC:Rural is thrilled to announce an exciting update to the Living Well with a Disability Program with a new online Facilitator Training. The new program updates make it easier for organizations to train staff and peers, prepare workshop materials, and receive technical support from both RTC:Rural and fellow Living Well with a Disability Program Providers.

Va-LEND Trainee Receives 2017 OAR Research Grant

Heather Coleman, who received her certificate of completion from Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (Va-LEND), Program this past May also received a $2000 Research Grant from The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) to support her dissertation research. Coleman's was among 26 proposals submitted to OAR, a national non-profit organization formed and led by relatives of children and adults with autism and Asperger Syndrome. A doctorial student at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Coleman's study is titled Parent Implemented Communication Intervention for Young Children with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities. She has 18 months to complete her research and will work directly with parents and their children with autism.

2017 Inclusive Health Forum
AUCD joined the Special Olympics International and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), and several other health, health care, and public health partners, at the 2017 Inclusive Health Forum in Washington D.C. The goal of the May 9 event was to create inclusive access to quality health promotion and care for people with intellectual disabilities. The vision is that inclusion of all people with disabilities becomes the norm for health promotion.

Individual Healthcare Plans: Developing and Implementing Effective Schoolwide Practices (SD UCEDD)

Individual Healthcare Plans (IHP) are written plans used in the school setting to communicate students' health conditions and their care/accommodation needs. They are written for a variety of health conditions and make it easier for school teams to determine appropriate healthcare interventions. The Heartland Genetic Services Collaborative conducted a focus group in which many parents, school nurses, healthcare professionals, school administrators and advocates recognized that a consistent, standardized practice was not in place for healthcare plan development or implementation. This prompted Heartland to team with the University of South Dakota (USD) Center for Disabilities to design a project to improve the IHP process.

Linking Refugees with Disabilities to Employment in Illinois (IL UCEDD)
Transnational refugees with disabilities are left out of many social service provisions typically provided to refugees. The Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago has received a three year grant funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) to address the support needs of refugees with disabilities.

GAO Report: Youth with Autism
Federal Agencies Should Take Additional Action to Support Transition - Age Youth
According to GAO's nationwide survey of school district special education directors, GAO estimates that about 85 percent of districts in school year 201516, provided youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services such as instruction on life, social, and behavioral skills, as they transition from high school to adulthood. ASD is a group of complex developmental disorders characterized by difficulties with social interactions, communication, and repetitive behaviors.
