Public Health Surveillance of Prenatal Opioid Exposure in Mothers and Infants

The US opioid crisis is the public health emergency of our time and requires urgent public health action to monitor and protect the most vulnerable Americans. We have witnessed a startling death toll in 2017 with 70 237 drug overdose deaths in the United States, of which two-thirds involved opioids. The devastating consequences of this epidemic for mothers and infants have received less attention. Increases in opioid use and misuse in pregnancy have paralleled the increases in the general population; at delivery hospitalization, there were 4 times as many women with an opioid use disorder in 2014 compared with 1999. One of the most immediate and visible impacts of the opioid crisis on infants is the drug withdrawal in the newborn period, termed neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). On the basis of 2014 data, 1 newborn was diagnosed with NAS every 15 minutes in the United States, totaling about 32 000 infants annually with associated hospital costs estimated at $563 million.

"Learn the Signs. Act Early." Ambassadors Expand the Reach of the Campaign

Since May 2015, the Learn the Signs. Act Early. Ambassadors distributed a total of 69,841 materials, and this is a 99.4 percent increase compared to the overall total of 39,984 materials distributed from June 2014 to November 2014. From December 2014 to April 30, 2015, approximately 12,868 target audience members have been reached. The Act Early Ambassadors reached 1,097 family service providers, 1,855 health care professionals, 4,272 early care and education providers, 5,571 parents of young children, and 25 media outlets. Learn the Signs. Act Early. materials are available in the following languages: Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, and Somali. Visit the Learn the Signs. Webinar: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Funded through the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the LEND Pediatric Audiology Training Program supports 10 LEND programs to increase the didactic content and clinical experience of trainees in pediatric audiology. This webinar used a combination of information from the literature, retrospective chart review of children with a dual diagnosis and feedback from family and professional focus groups to assist the learner in understanding the unique needs of children who are deaf/hard of hearing with an autism spectrum disorder. Red Flags for atypical communication were presented as well as information about the needs related to communication, functional skills, and integrated care models.

Congressional Autism Caucus Releases Report on Federal Autism-Related Efforts

U.S. Representatives Mike Doyle (PA-14) and Chris Smith (NJ-4), released a report describing autism-related research and service activities carried out by the US Government over the last four years. This report, which was required by the Combating Autism Act (CAA) of 2006, describes action that the Federal Government has undertaken since enactment of the CAA, primarily in the fields of research and services. The report highlights the positive impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and noted the effectiveness of behavioral health treatments for children with autism.
