AUCD & the Center on Disability Studies Host "Standing Room Only" Side Event at the United Nations Conference of State Parties to the CRPD

With over 500 delegates from civil society and governments, the three day United Nations Fourth Session of the Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons (CRPD) held at the United Nations Secretariat generated diplomatic discussions and debate evolving around the conference theme, "Enabling Development, Realizing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities."

Elisabeth Dykens, PhD, at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, Is Named to Special Olympics International Board of Directors

Special Olympics International has elected three new members to its Board of Directors, including a renowned figure skater, a Special Olympics athlete and a leading scholar in the field of intellectual disabilities. The new Board Members are figure skating champion Michelle Kwan, Special Olympics Canada athlete Matthew Williams, and Elisabeth Dykens, Ph.D., Annette Schaffer Eskind Chair and Director, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center; Co-Director, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities; Professor of Psychology & Human Development, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics.

2010 International Service Award

Barbara LeRoy, PhD, of the Developmental Disabilities Institute, Wayne State University, received the 2010 International Service Award today at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Conference. Barbara was unable to attend the ceremony; David Morrissey, MPS, Executive Director of the US International Council on Disabilities, accepted the award on her behalf. This is the first year the award was given.

The 10th Anniversary of the International Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS) Conference was held in June 2010 in Cernobbio, Italy. The theme of this year's conference was Beyond Newborn Hearing Screening: Infant and Childhood Hearing in Science and Clinical Practice.



Willi Horner-Johnson, PhD, (Oregon Institute on Disability & Development: OR UCEDD/LEND) Received two 2009 New Investigator Awards: American Public Health Association and the International Society for Quality of Life Research

Willi Horner-Johnson, PhD, is Research Assistant Professor of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She earned a PhD at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in disabilities and health at OHSU. Dr Horner-Johnson is also a Research Scientist for OHSU's Center on Community Accessibility (CCA), a program of the Oregon Institute on Disability and Development.

Solomon L. Mosh?, M.D., a leading pediatric epilepsy clinician and researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, is the newly elected President of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).

Chris Ikonomidou, MD, PhD (Waisman UCEDD) Awarded International Michael Prize for Epilepsy Research

The Michael Prize was awarded for the first time in 1963 to stimulate epilepsy research in Germany; it is now one of the most highly regarded international awards for the best contribution to scientific and clinical research promoting further development in epileptology.

Robert Jacobs, MD, MPH (USC Children's Hospital Los Angeles: CA UCEDD) Presented at the International Forum on Disability & Development in Beijing

Dr Jacobs spoke on The 20th Century - One Hundred Years of Progress for Medical, Social, Educational, and Legal Issues related to Childhood Health and Disability. He emphasized that for those with, or at risk for developmental disabilities, the 20th century was remarkable for improvements made in the areas of disability prevention, medical treatment, and rehabilitation.

AUCD Policy Fellow Presents at International Disability Conference

David presented "Effective Transition Planning for Children with Special Health Care Needs: Recommendations for Collaborative Systems." This presentation grew from a series of projects on transition which he began last year during graduate coursework in health care systems and as a trainee in the LEND program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campus in Little Rock.
