MMI Contributes to Study on Whole Genome Sequencing

For nearly three years, Kristen Fishler, a genetic counselor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute Department of Genetics, and her colleagues at UNMC and MMI, have been working with sites across the country to document the impact of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) as a diagnostic tool for acutely ill infants with a suspected genetic disease.

Coming Soon! AUCD Launches a New Podcast

We are proud to present AUCD's new podcast-- AUCD Network Narratives: Real Stories from Our Members. The podcast shares real stories from network members who are working to change systems and structures that impact people with disabilities. This first season focuses on network members promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion and reducing disparities for Black and brown disabled people. AUCD's 12 Children's Mental Health Champions Complete Their Projects for the 2020-2021 Year

In 2020, the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) expanded its National Center on Disability in Public Health efforts with the launch of a new pilot program, Children's Mental Health Champions. This effort was made possible through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twelve Champions were selected, representing American Samoa, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Virginia, to serve as liaisons to the CDC's Children's Mental Health project in 2020-2021.

New Nationally Certified Training for Vocational Rehabilitation Leaders

The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is announcing the Transformational Rehabilitation Leader Training (TRLT), a new, nationally certified, professional education program in partnership with the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC), and the University of Wisconsin-Stout Vocational Rehabilitation Institute (SVRI).

Request for Application: Trainee and Training Director Stipend Opportunity for Local Vaccine Outreach

Submission deadline is extended to 5 pm ET on September 21, 2021.

Through an upcoming single-source award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), a selection of Trainees and Training Directors from the AUCD network members will conduct COVID-19 vaccine outreach with the disability community as part of a larger effort, Local Vaccine Outreach with the Disability Community. Successful applicants will propose innovative message delivery streams and local modalities to reach people with disabilities (including individuals not connected to service delivery systems), their families, and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), with the overarching goal of boosting COVID-19 vaccination rates in the disability community.

TTAP Battles Social Isolation with Connectivity Kits

In light of the pandemic and increased isolation in our communities, the Aging and Disability Resources Center of the Capital Area (ADRC) and the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) has partnered with the Texas Technology Access Program (TTAP) to create Connectivity Kits to help reduce social isolation by increasing connectivity for older persons, persons with disabilities, and their caregivers.

Connectivity Kits at Texas Center for Disability Studies

The Texas Technology Access Program, within the Texas Center for Disability Studies at the University of Texas at Austin collaborated with the local Aging and Disability Resource Center (Capital Area Council of Governments) to assemble connectivity kits for persons with disabilities, older adults, and their caregivers. The intent is to reduce isolation while connecting people to their community and to telemedicine.

MI-DDI and FEMA Flood Disaster Speakers Panel

Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to host a webinar featuring several speakers from FEMA on August 25, 2021. The session focused on resources and aid available to Michiganders affected by the severe storms and floods of June 2021. The webinar and links to resources and information can be accessed on MI-DDI's video resources page.

Nisonger Center & AUCD Professional Fellows Win U.S. State Department Award

The U.S. Department of State has awarded a $32,000 AEIF grant to AUCD Professional Fellows alumni and a Nisonger Center team led by Dr. Margo Izzo and Dr. Paula Rabidoux. The AEIF award (U.S. Department of State Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund) will sponsor the expansion of an online inclusive education & employment training partnership that connects Ohio LEND faculty, staff, and trainees to teachers in Tanzania's schools.
