UCLA PEERS Clinic: New Book Release
September 17, 2013
On the evening of Tuesday, September 24th, the Friends of the Semel Institute hosted a launch party for the release of Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson's newest book titled The Science of Making Friends: Helping Socially Challenged Teens and Young Adults. The book is based on her research and work with the UCLA PEERS® Clinic, the only evidence-based, parent-assisted social skills intervention for adolescents and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other social challenges.
The Science of Making Friends is a step-by-step guide, helping parents, educators, and others provide "social coaching" to teens and young adults interested in making and keeping friends. The book offers a plethora of behavior exercises to practice the skills described, as well as a DVD companion containing video demonstrations of the lessons. As additional support, Dr. Laugeson has designed a mobile application providing an overview of the rules and steps with embedded video demonstrations to show the appropriate and inappropriate use of the skills. For more information on The Science of Making Friends, please visit the UCLA PEERS® Clinic website at www.semel.ucla.edu/peers or contact Dr. Laugeson at (310) 267-3377.
