In Memoriam: Morris Green, MD

In Memoriam: Morris Green, MD

Dr. Morris Green, MD, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the age of 91. Dr. Green was a nationally renowned pediatrician, inspiring educator, and prolific author. He dedicated himself to a lifelong commitment to the health and well-being of Indiana's children through his extraordinary service of almost 50 years to Riley Hospital for Children, serving as its Physician-in-Chief from 1967-1988 and Chairman of the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Green was the Founding Director (1970) of the Indiana LEND, then University Affiliated Facility or UAF, and a pioneer in Behavioral Pediatrics and family centered care."  Read more....

National Disability Employment Expert (MT UCEDD)

Dr. Catherine Ipsen was among a select few recently invited to present her research findings at the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The presentation and subsequent meeting with national leaders in disability and employment was focused on the translation of research findings to practice. According to Ipsen it was "an incredible experience to spend a day with leading researchers in the field -- the people I reference in my own work and look to for guidance in an evolving field." Center for Leadership in Disability Welcomes Andrew Roach, PhD as Associate DirectorThe Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD), a University Center for Excellence in Disability at Georgia State University (GSU) is pleased to announce that Andy Roach, PhD, has joined the faculty staff as Associate Director. In addition to his position at CLD, Dr. Roach is an associate professor with joint appointments in the School of Public Health and the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services in the College of Education.  Read more...

Virginia LEND Welcomes New Faculty MembersThe Va-LEND program is pleased to announce the addition of two new faculty members. Beth Bader is joining the Va-LEND core faculty from the School of Education, Department of Special Education and Disability Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In the School of Education, Dr. Bader is an Assistant Professor and coordinates the M.Ed. in Severe Disabilities program. Matthew (Matt) Bogenschutz is joining the Va-LEND core faculty from the VCU School of Social Work. Dr. Bogenschutz comes to VCU with over 8 years of practice experience in IDD and five years of experience at the Institute on Community Integration, Minnesota's UCEDD, including one year as a Minnesota LEND post-doctoral fellow.  Read more...

'Parents Perspectives' Video Series from the OK UCEDD

The Center for Learning and Leadership, Oklahoma's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (Oklahoma UCEDD) recently developed a short video series featuring parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or special health care needs. In the videos parents share their perspectives on getting a disability diagnosis, supporting their children through transitions in the school system, and dealing with emergency personnel. The two Ohio UCEDDs Collaborate with Susan G. Komen Affiliates to Improve the Mammography Experience for Women with DisabilitiesThe Ohio Disability and Health Program (ODHP) is a CDC-funded, statewide program with goals to promote health and increase access to care for Ohioans with disabilities. ODHP is a close collaboration of the two Ohio UCEDDs, the University of Cincinnati (UC) UCEDD and The Ohio State University Nisonger Center, with Susan Havercamp at Nisonger Center as the Principal Investigator of the project. Other collaborators include the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC) and the Ohio Department of Health. ODHP is also guided by its advisory panel, the Disability Community Planning Group (DCPG).  Read more...

Nebraska DD Network Eyes Possible Affordable Care Impact (NE UCEDD)Medicaid is a core program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That's why the implications of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were the focus of an early summer meeting between members of the advisory boards for Munroe-Meyer Institute's (MMI) Center for Excellence in Disabilities, the Nebraska Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities and the Disability Rights Nebraska Advisory Council. The entities represent the three federal Developmental Disabilities (DD) programs in Nebraska.  The meeting helped facilitate discussion among the groups as to what needs to be done to help protect services that are already in place and to advocate for expansion of certain limited services, said Wayne Stuberg, Ph.D., associate director of MMI."  Read more...

For the past several years, MonTECH director Kathy Laurin and her staff have been compiling accessibility information for Montana public recreation lands. During the summer of 2013, Lee Bastian, who recently retired as a Regional Park Manager for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, evaluated recreation sites in western Montana to see how accessible they are... or aren't, for people with disabilities. CPD Researchers Publish PICCOLO Tool (UT UCEDD)A new observational tool, developed by researchers at Utah State University's Center for Persons with Disabilities, has been published by Brookes Publishing and will be available in mid-October. Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLOTM), which was designed to assess and monitor the quality of parent-child interactions, provides home visiting, parent education, and early childhood programs with valuable information for strengthening parenting practices.  Read more...

Autism Training Model Reaches Across State (UT UCEDD)A unique method of teaching preschool children on the autism spectrum to communicate their needs is spreading to 14 Utah school districts this fall, including Logan, Park City and Granite school districts. Based at Utah State University's Center for Persons with Disabilities, the ASSERT (Autism Support Services: Education, Research and Training) model utilizes applied behavior analysis (ABA) to change the challenging negative behaviors associated with autism.  Read more...

3 Islands Host First-ever Self-Advocacy Summer Camps (NMC UCEDD)The Self-Advocacy Summer Camp was first brought up by Frank Cabrera of Autism Society of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands as part of the Administration on Developmental Disabilities' call to establish a self-advocacy group here in the CNMI back in 2012 at the Self-Advocacy Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii. On July 22, 2013, they concluded the effort that has taken almost two years to fulfill and announced that all three islands have had their own Self-Advocacy Summer Camp and they all have been a success! Read more...

Nisonger Center (OH UCEDD/LEND) Hosts Autism Institute: Autism Across the LifespanOn June 25, 2013, Nisonger Center hosted an Autism Institute at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. This annual event focuses on translational research in the area of autism spectrum disorders. Speakers at this year's Institute included Dr. Marsha Mailick (Waisman Center, UCEDD/LEND), Dr. Tamar Heller (University of Illinois, UCEDD/LEND) and Drs. Thomas Fish and Jessica Hellings from Nisonger Center. More than 150 attendees included professionals, trainees, people with ASD and family members or caregivers. Read more...

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD) collects stories from parents of children with disabilities with diverse cultural backgroundThe Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD) has compiled a booklet of stories from families of children with disabilities with diverse cultural backgrounds now living in Tennessee. The stories were collected as a collaborative effort of Tennessee Kindred Stories of Disability and the Tennessee Multicultural Alliance on Disability to raise awareness about the unique barriers and challenges immigrants and refugees face as they navigate an unfamiliar service system and culture.  Read more...

In September 2013, AHEAD will send Carol Funckes, Associate Director of Disability Resources and Sue Kroeger, Director of Disability Resources from the University of Arizona, to Ukraine for a preliminary exchange visit to gain an understanding of disability and inclusion in Ukrainian communities and to lay the foundation for an effective ongoing international relationship.
