Background

In 2011 and 2012, the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) supported 9 regional Self-Advocacy Summits in collaboration with the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) and AUCD. The purpose of the summits was to gather information on the status of self-advocacy across the country, to strengthen self-advocacy efforts in the states and to obtain input on national priorities. Supporting self-advocacy organizations and providing technical assistance were  some of the top priorities identified by self-advocates attending the Summits. AIDD subsequently funded this opportunity for self-advocacy groups to increase their organizational capacity. AUCD managed the mini-grant competition and will help administer the grants.

The goal of these grants is to provide self-advocacy organizations the opportunity to build their organizations, expand their membership and demonstrate their success. There are two types of grants: Grant "A" is for self-advocacy groups who wish to grow and become stronger while working toward obtaining 501(c)3 status; Grant "B" is for self-advocacy groups with 501(c)3 status who wish to provide peer-to-peer technical assistance to other self-advocacy groups on how they can grow and become stronger while working toward obtaining 501(c)3 status. Additional information about the grants as well as the 9 regional summits is available at http://alliesinselfadvocacy.org/.

Competition Summary

AUCD received a total of 41 applications from self-advocacy groups representing a significant number of states and territories across the country. Applications were received from 24 self-advocacy groups interested in obtaining 501(c)3 status (Group A), and 17 self-advocacy groups interested in providing peer-to-peer technical assistance (Group B). Completed applications were scored by peer review panels that included 2 DD Network members (UCEDD, DD Council, or P&A staff), and at least 1 self-advocate. Applicants receiving the highest scores among each group (A and B) are awarded the mini-grants. Congratulations the following Self-Advocacy Organizational Development Grantees!
