Baltimore MCHB Training Programs Join to Discuss Cultural Competence

As an ongoing activity of the 2011 Maryland MCHB Diversity Learning Collaborative, the Kennedy Krieger Institute LEND program co-sponsored a day-long conference and faculty workshop on December 11, Room to Grow: Journey to Cultural Competency with the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities and the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions.
University partners in this endeavor included:
- The Johns Hopkins LEAH
- Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health
- Morgan State University
- Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Departments of Pediatrics and Child Psychiatry.
Over 90 trainees, staff, faculty, and community members took place in the conference. Tarawa Goode of the National for Cultural Competence at the Georgetown University was the keynote speaker and workshop leader. The conference included didactics, case studies, small group work to encourage participant critical thinking and problem-solving about cultural and linguistic competence and health disparities especially as these topics related to MCH. The faculty workshop presented information from an exhaustive review of the literature on effective mentoring strategies to support and promote under-represented racial and ethnic populations in training and faculty positions.
