The Young Professional Award is presented to professionals in the disabilities field under the age of 40 years who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to people with developmental and other disabilities and their families through their work as a bridge between the academic sector and the community.

In Recognition of Your Advocacy, Commitment, and Promise

Ilka has served as a bridge between the academic world and the community at large.  She translates research into grant-funded projects that have improved communities and individual lives. Ilka consistently brings the University and the community together to improve the health and well-being of people with disabilities. She encompasses the unique qualities of both an academic scholar and a front-line professional, supporting individuals with disabilities and their families to improve their quality of life. From her years as a child life specialist in a children's hospital, to her research and evaluation efforts, to her CDC-funded health promotion initiatives for people with disabilities, she is always striving for excellence, leading by example with determination, poise, and confidence.
