2012-2013 LEND Pediatric Audiology Webinar Series

October 2, 2012

To an infant or child, being able to hear is important for the development of speech, language and learning.  The earlier a child with hearing loss begins to receive services, the more likely they are to reach their full potential.

Recognizing the critical need for early hearing detection and intervention, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, HRSA, provides financial support to 10 LEND audiology programs. LEND programs funded through this initiative are encouraged to increase the clinical and didactic experiences available within their audiology programs and to support greater numbers of trainees in the field of pediatric audiology. Through this initiative, LEND programs have successfully encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration among pediatric audiology trainees and other LEND trainees and promoted leadership among their trainees.

Through its Cooperative Agreement with MCHB, AUCD works closely with these LEND training programs to assist in the dissemination of curricula, to provide technical assistance to programs as they implement their pediatric audiology curricula, and  provide a forum for programs to share experiences and best practices.

Trainees who have participated in these pediatric training programs have engaged in research projects and have presented their research in posters and presentations at local, state and national meetings. While most trainees are still in the process of completing their programs, graduates of the program have already assumed leadership positions in both rural and urban pediatric settings.

This year, LEND Pediatric Audiology Training Programs have decided to engage their trainees in a different kind of leadership activity. In 2012-2013, pediatric audiology trainees will assist in the development of a webinar series. The series will include 4 webinars, each 90 minutes in length.

Please mark your calendar for our first webinar scheduled for Monday, October 29th from 4:00-5:30pm EST. This webinar will feature two pediatric audiology training programs: The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh and the Children's Hospital in Boston.
