Description: C:Users	christensenAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.Wordiowa dph.jpgThe Iowa Prevention of Disabilities Policy Council, with staff assistance from the state health department and the University of Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development, recently hosted a state strategic planning event to develop goals and objectives for critical health issues previously identified. Sixty-eight individuals representing state and local public health, health care providers, community service providers and people with disabilities participated. Gloria Krahn PhD, with the Division of Human Development and Disability at the NCBDDD/CDC, provided an overview of the CDC Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Disabilities. In addition, Mary Andrus, Assistant Vice-President for Government Relations at Easter Seals USA, provided an update on the implementation of health care reform and people with disabilities, highlighting issues the states must address. Workgroups then addressed these four areas: access to health care (including preventive services), public health infrastructure, community health and wellness and emergency preparedness. A final plan is expected to be ready by June 2012.
