2002-2005 NSIP Accomplishments: Nevada

Focus area and target population

We were interested in working with all AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps*VISTA projects.

Local & National Organizations and networks impacted

  • Working closely with Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living to support VISTA members with DD
  • VISTA members will be presenting info regarding inclusion into national and community service to disability organizations throughout NV

Significant Outcomes & Accomplishments

  • Six VISTA members with DD hired to develop statewide self-advocacy project
  • State plan for inclusion developed
  • Inclusion brochure developed
  • All AmeriCorps projects including verbiage regarding inclusion in all advertising
  • Inclusion training for all AmeriCorps project directors held
  • Conducted two inclusion trainings (Reno & LV) for AmeriCorps members at NV National Service Summit

Activities & Funding Opportunities

  • UCEDD will begin a contract with the NV State commission to do their disability training as of 7-1-05
  • UCEDD has secured accommodation funding from VISTA state office to support one of the VISTA members with assistive technology
  • UCEDD has applied for a State Formula AmeriCorps grant to develop a youth transition project for students with disabilities
  • The UCEDD received a grant from the NV Commission on National & Community Service for a Youth Transition Project. The Center will be using AmeriCorps members as mentors for individual youth with disabilities who are transitioning from high school to adult life. The project will follow the highly successful Montana (UCEDD) Rural Institute's Customized Employment model.
