The AUCD Trainee Handbook is intended to be used to support AUCD network trainees with a variety of learning goals. This document will provide a consistent approach to accessing information about the network, its history, our federal partners, and the rich resources available to trainees. This handbook is considered a supplement to Trainee Handbooks provided at local programs.

Training Directors are encouraged to:

  1. Have trainees read the Trainee Handbook
  2. Have trainees complete the accompanying quiz and reflection questions
  3. Have trainees discuss the quiz and reflection questions one-on-one with their faculty mentor, training director, or in a large group with faculty and fellow trainees.

History

At the 2008 AUCD Annual Meeting, the National Training Directors Council discussed the common training activities around the network. Nearly all programs, LEND and UCEDD alike, begin the training of trainees with an introduction to the history of disabilities, our programs' federal funders, AUCD, and some of the rich resources available during training. In an effort to make that introduction easier for all programs, a group of Training Directors created this handbook.  The Handbook is updated yearly by the authors and a small group of Training Directors.

Included with the Handbook itself (download at right) are a series of quiz questions intended to assist trainees comprehend the handbook's information as well as the answers to those quiz questions (for training directors).

For more information on the Trainee Handbook or with suggestions for improvement, contact Steve Viehweg.

Forward

"Welcome! As a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LEND) or a University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) trainee, we are delighted to welcome you to your training experience. This brief learning experience will help you discover important information to understand how you fit into a magnificent network of programs coordinated at a regional and national level through Association of University Centers in Disabilities (AUCD).

As you complete this learning experience you will discover more about the history and definitions of developmental disabilities, your role as a trainee, the structure of your training program, the federal agencies that support it, and how the national network can enhance your learning goals and possible future employment in the field.

This learning experience is designed to provide you with information, links to websites, and opportunities to reflect on your learning as you talk with your training supervisor and build your portfolio of leadership and clinical experiences."
