Act Early Fellowship Opportunity

AUCD is pleased to announce an exciting fellowship opportunity to work with the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia. The Fellow will join a small, interdisciplinary team of medical and health communication experts that focuses on building awareness and improving early identification of developmental disabilities. Three main components comprise the program:
- Increase awareness of developmental milestones and early warning signs of developmental disability; increase dialogue among parents and providers about child development; and spur early action on developmental concerns through the "Learn the Signs. Act Early." health communication campaign
- Improve systems at the state and local level to improve early identification and intervention through Act Early Regional Summits
- Learn more about overcoming barriers to action, building capacity, and improving systems that identify and intervene with children at risk for developmental disability through extramural research
The Fellow will be expected to work in all three components of the program. Responsibilities will include:
- State early identification systems: plan, assist and participate in summits, help build the strategy and plan for next steps. In particular: help states implement plans and develop products for improving system collaboration, identify best practices and develop standards for state services map, and explore policy approaches to improving early identification and early intervention
- Communication: Draft and review newsletter articles, webinars, posters, and presentations; assist with campaign activities
- Research: Work with AUCD to manage extramural research grants and cooperative agreements, including developing topics and providing technical assistance to grantees
Qualifications:
- Staff, current trainee, recent graduate (in the last 4 years), or faculty in the UCEDD, LEND, or IDDRC network
- Knowledge of early childhood development and early intervention, including Part C and Section 619 special education programs
- Interest in developing a systems approach to addressing the issues and needs of children with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental disabilities
- Interest in program and services development
- Health communication science knowledge and experience is a plus
Annual salary ranges from $50,000 to $70,000 based on education and work experience. This is anticipated to be a two-year fellowship. Starting date is negotiable, ranging from late Fall 2009 through early 2010.
