College Reaches Out to New Students with Disabilities

September 4, 2008

The difference between high school special education programs and college classes is a frightening factor for new college students with disabilities. Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin was highlighted in The Capital Times as being excellent at reaching out to those students in an attempt to make the experience less jarring. The college provides a summer orientation for first-year students with disabilities that teaches self-advocacy, note taking, and testing skills. Services continue to be provided to students throughout the school year.
