AAIDD & AUCD Webinar for Students & Early Career Professionals: Effective Networking Activities and Mentoring Experiences: Materials Archived

The Committee on Student and Junior Member Recruitment and Retention of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) invite you to participate in an upcoming early career development webinar. AAIDD and AUCD are collaborating on a series of webinars aimed at meeting needs of students, trainees, and early professionals in the field of disabilities. The upcoming webinar will feature three speakers, Ann Turnbull, Ed.D., Distinguished Professor and Director of the Beach Center on Disability, William Gaventa, MDiv, Director of the Community & Congregational Supports at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities in New Jersey, and Luchara Sayles Wallace a Doctoral Student at the University of Kansas Beach Center on Disability. The speakers will share their tips, advice, and experiences regarding networking within associations, agencies, and with individuals with disabilities and family members. Additionally, this webinar will discuss the AAIDD Guide Program as well as other programs that support early career professionals. Following their remarks will be an opportunity for Q&A.

Speakers

Ann Turnbull

Ann Turnbull is the Co-Director of the Beach Center on Disability and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Special Education at The University of Kansas.  She has authored 12 books, and two (now in 5th edition) are leading textbooks in the field of special education.  Additionally, she has authored approximately 200 articles, chapters, and monographs.  She is the Past President of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.  Ann received the Century Leadership Award in Mental Retardation which was given by The National Historic Preservation Trust (a consortium of seven national organizations in the field of mental retardation) in 1999.  This award was given to 36 individuals who had made the most significant contributions to "changing the course of history in mental retardation during the 20th Century."  Additionally, she received the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy International Leadership Award.  Her three major areas of specialization are family quality of life, family-professional partnerships, and knowledge translation.

Bill Gaventa

William Gaventa, MDiv, is the Director of Community and Congregational Supports at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, and Associate Professor, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In his role at The Boggs Center, Bill works on community supports, training for community services staff, and supervision of a program in Clinical Pastoral Education. He also coordinates a training and technical assistance team for the New Jersey Self Directed Supports Projects, including the Self Determination Initiative.  Bill has served in a variety of professional and volunteer roles. Before coming to New Jersey, he was Coordinator of Family Support for the Georgia Developmental Disabilities Council. He moved to Georgia from New York, where he served as Chaplain and Coordinator of Religious Services for the Monroe Developmental Center. He was a graduate of Stetson University in Florida and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. As writer and author, he is Co-Editor of the Journal of Religion Disability, and Health, editor of two newsletters, and a columnist for Insight, the national newsletter of The Arc of the United States. Writings include journal articles, book chapters, monographs, resource collections, booklets, and three edited books. In volunteer roles, Bill has served as Executive Secretary for the Religion and Spirituality Division of the AAMR since 1985 and has served on the Board of Directors of AAIDD.

Lachara

Luchara Sayles Wallace is a fourth year doctoral student in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas.  Her areas of research interest include: access to services and supports as well as family quality of life issues in traditionally underserved communities.  Luchara is a Graduate Research Fellow at the Beach Center on Disability.  Prior to moving to Lawrence, she lived in Chicago, IL, and worked in the Archdiocese of Chicago as a teacher, professional development leader, and advocate for students with disabilities.
