March 17, 2008
The Ann and Monroe Carell Jr. Families First Program, co-sponsored by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD), is conducting a series of workshops designed to provide specific instruction and skills to parents with young children (2-5 years) diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. "The Families First Program will arm parents with information and concrete skills for enhancing their child's behavior in the core areas of ASD vulnerability," said Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Autism Parent Support and Education Program. "The program recognizes that parents are the experts when it comes to their own children and is designed to ensure that parents desiring help for their child with an ASD will have a way to get that help." The series begins with the introductory session, "Working With and Developing Goals for Young Children with Autism," and is followed by sessions on enhancing social and communication skills and managing challenging behaviors.
