Senate Passes Newborn Screening Bill

December 18, 2007

Advocates are applauding the US Senate's unanimous passage of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act (S 1858) on December 13, introduced in July 2007 and sponsored by Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut. The bill amends the Public Health Service Act to establish grant programs to provide education and outreach on newborn screening, to provide coordinated follow-up care once newborn screening has been conducted and to reauthorize programs under part A of title XI of the Act, among other purposes.
