Release of 2005-2006 Data from the National Survey of CSHCN

On November 28, 2007, the National Center for Health Statistics released microdata from the 2005-2006 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs. This survey was sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). This survey was first conducted in 2001; this is the second time that this survey has been conducted. The survey data can be used to develop updated estimates of the prevalence of special health care needs among children, both nationally and within each state. This survey also explored the extent to which children with special health care needs have medical homes, adequate health insurance, and access to needed services. Other topics include functional difficulties, care coordination, satisfaction with care, and transition services.

A list of variables on the data set, as well as sample SAS programs for reading and formatting the data, are available on the web site for the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Need.

With this data release, NCHS has also released a prepublication version of a report titled "Design and Operation of the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs". This report presents the development, plan, and operation of the survey, as well as technical information about the data files and estimation procedures. An edited, printed, and bound version of this report will be available in 2008.

Please check the SLAITS website within the next few months for the following additions:

  1. Within the next few days, the list of publications based on SLAITS data will be updated. If there are any publications that you would like to see included, please send citations or links to [email protected].
  2. Within a few weeks, summary tables from the 2005-2006 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs will be available at the state level for assessing progress toward implementing community-based systems of services for children with special health care needs. The SAS program developed to estimate key MCHB national performance measures and to produce these summary tables will be included in this report.
  3. A chartbook highlighting the major findings of the survey is being prepared by MCHB and will be posted when it is available.
  4. Missing values for household poverty level were multiply imputed, and these imputed values have been released with the survey data. A report describing the development and use of the imputed values is being prepared and will be posted when it is available. In its absence, data users are encouraged to consult the report on the use of multiply imputed poverty values from the 2001 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs.
