Culturally Relevant Trauma Training Video Developed by Georgia State's Center for Leadership in Disability
Researchers from the Center for Leadership in Disability in the Georgia State University School of Public Health have created a trauma training video module that covers the complex needs of Latinx immigrant and migratory children in Georgia. The project was supported by a grant from Morehouse School of Medicine's Community Engagement and Course Action Network and seeks to fill a gap in school’s personnel training to help avoid putting these youth in greater jeopardy of developing mental disorders and poor academic performance. High School Students with Disabilities Achieve Better Outcomes in Inclusive Academic Settings
Indiana high school students with disabilities who spent 80% of their educational time in general education classrooms scored higher on state reading and math assessments and were better prepared for postsecondary education and employment opportunities than their peers in less inclusive settings, according to a new study by Indiana University researchers. UNH's Institute on Disability to Continue Support for NH Residents
The University of New Hampshire received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue its support of the one in eight New Hampshire residents who report having a disability, including serious difficulties with vision, hearing, mobility, cognition, self-care, or independent living. The award will allow the Institute on Disability (IOD) to continue serving as New Hampshire’s designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). Read more...
Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) co-authors: Early work experiences are important for subsequent employment for youth with disabilities
A primary purpose of special education is to equip students with disabilities for a flourishing future after graduation. Yet, the employment outcomes of youth with disabilities have continued to lag far behind their peers without disabilities. Researchers found that, in most studies, youth with disabilities were much more likely to obtain work after participating in a school- or community-based intervention. These researchers identify the strategies most likely to be effective and suggest areas for improvement in the quality of future studies. These findings and more may be found in an article written by Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) co-authors and published in the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation. Read more...
Kansas LEND Dr. Kathy Ellerbeck Retires
Last week we said "see you later" to Dr. Kathy Ellerbeck after 22 years with Kansas LEND at the Center for Child Health and Development at KU Medical Center. Dr. Ellerbeck served as the Kansas LEND Director from 2014 to 2019 and is a Developmental Pediatrician that held leadership positions within state and national organizations. Throughout her career she cared for thousands of children and their families as well as taught and made a lasting impression on hundreds of medical and clinical students at the Medical Center and other academic institutions. UVM Autism Collaborative Receives $350K for Rural Autism Outreach
A University of Vermont team focused on health care and research related to autism has received two awards totaling $350,000 through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards program. University of Miami Health System Partners with Shriners Hospital for New Children's Orthopedic Center
A vital new partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children has led the way for UHealth – University of Miami Health System and Jackson Health System to create a sophisticated facility dedicated to programs and treatments that will help pediatric orthopedic patients. The partnership was announced during a press conference attended by leadership from the institutions involved in the new center. Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., president of the University of Miami; Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., chief operating officer for UHealth; and Carlos A. NH-ME LEND Welcomes 2023 Cohort
On September 9th and 10th, the NH-ME LEND Program welcomed the 2023 cohort! LEND faculty members from University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth, and the University of Maine gathered with 19 trainees to participate in a meet and greet, followed by an afternoon of team building at the UNH Browne Center. Trainees and faculty continued their work on Saturday at the Leadership "Boost" with a full-day introductory session on leadership through a LEND lens.
