How do we ensure that all people have equal access to health? It’s more than just health care. From housing to meaningful employment, to access to vaccination sites and a safe trip to the grocery store, people with disabilities and their families experience daily disruptions and are often marginalized when it comes to accessing a broad array of needed services. At this year’s AUCD Conference, we look forward to exploring health equity, the social determinants of health, and the steps needed to ensure that every person is provided with the best opportunities possible. Mailman Center Faculty Member Receives Health Care Hero Award

Mailman Center for Child Development faculty member Tiffany Field, Ph.D., was one of three physicians from the University of Miami to be honored at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s 23rd Health Care Heroes Awards Luncheon. Joseph Dougherty, PhD., Professor of Genetics and Psychiatry at Washington University in St Louis, will join Dr. Christina Gurnett, MD, PhD as the Co-Director of the Washington University Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC@WUSTL). He will replace John N. Constantino who has assumed the role as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s first system chief of Behavioral and Mental Health, and Emory University School of Medicine professor in the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics. University of Arizona LEND Changes in Leadership

Eileen R. McGrath, Ph.D. is the new Program Director and Principal Investigator for the University of Arizona LEND MCH Training Program (Arizona LEND). For the past 12 years, she has been the LEND Co-Director and Training Director. Dr. McGrath is an Associate Professor in the College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and has a joint faculty appointment in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the university. Read more...

Culturally Relevant Trauma Training Video Developed by Georgia State's Center for Leadership in Disability

Researchers from the Center for Leadership in Disability in the Georgia State University School of Public Health have created a trauma training video module that covers the complex needs of Latinx immigrant and migratory children in Georgia. The project was supported by a grant from Morehouse School of Medicine's Community Engagement and Course Action Network and seeks to fill a gap in school’s personnel training to help avoid putting these youth in greater jeopardy of developing mental disorders and poor academic performance. Read more...

 

High School Students with Disabilities Achieve Better Outcomes in Inclusive Academic Settings

Indiana high school students with disabilities who spent 80% of their educational time in general education classrooms scored higher on state reading and math assessments and were better prepared for postsecondary education and employment opportunities than their peers in less inclusive settings, according to a new study by Indiana University researchers.

Guest contributor William (Bill) Gaventa, M.Div., recently submitted a blog post, “Including God in Person-Centered Planning: The Importance of Spirituality” to the University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (ME UCEDD’s) Equity and Policy Blog. In his post, Bill describes the importance of exploring the spiritual backgrounds, preferences, and interests of people we support through person-centered planning. He suggests that good person-centered thinking gets at the many stories that people are part of or would like to be part of. Read more...


UNH's Institute on Disability to Continue Support for NH Residents

Institute on Disability/UCED University of New HampshireThe University of New Hampshire received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue its support of the one in eight New Hampshire residents who report having a disability, including serious difficulties with vision, hearing, mobility, cognition, self-care, or independent living. The award will allow the Institute on Disability (IOD) to continue serving as New Hampshire’s designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). Read more...

The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities (NJ UCEDD/LEND) Launches Community Life Video SeriesA primary purpose of special education is to equip students with disabilities for a flourishing future after graduation. Yet, the employment outcomes of youth with disabilities have continued to lag far behind their peers without disabilities. Researchers found that, in most studies, youth with disabilities were much more likely to obtain work after participating in a school- or community-based intervention. These researchers identify the strategies most likely to be effective and suggest areas for improvement in the quality of future studies. These findings and more may be found in an article written by Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) co-authors and published in the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation. Read more...

Kansas LEND Dr. Kathy Ellerbeck RetiresLast week we said "see you later" to Dr. Kathy Ellerbeck after 22 years with Kansas LEND at the Center for Child Health and Development at KU Medical Center. Dr. Ellerbeck served as the Kansas LEND Director from 2014 to 2019 and is a Developmental Pediatrician that held leadership positions within state and national organizations. Throughout her career she cared for thousands of children and their families as well as taught and made a lasting impression on hundreds of medical and clinical students at the Medical Center and other academic institutions. UVM Autism Collaborative Receives $350K for Rural Autism OutreachA University of Vermont team focused on health care and research related to autism has received two awards totaling $350,000 through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards program. University of Miami Health System Partners with Shriners Hospital for New Children's Orthopedic Center

A vital new partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children has led the way for UHealth – University of Miami Health System and Jackson Health System to create a sophisticated facility dedicated to programs and treatments that will help pediatric orthopedic patients. The partnership was announced during a press conference attended by leadership from the institutions involved in the new center. Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., president of the University of Miami; Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., chief operating officer for UHealth; and Carlos A. Migoya, chief executive officer of Jackson, were among those in attendance and spoke of the partnership's benefit to academic medicine and the South Florida community. Read more...

 

NH-ME LEND Welcomes 2023 Cohort

The 2023 NH-ME LEND cohort participates in a team-building activity outside.

On September 9th and 10th, the NH-ME LEND Program welcomed the 2023 cohort! LEND faculty members from University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth, and the University of Maine gathered with 19 trainees to participate in a meet and greet, followed by an afternoon of team building at the UNH Browne Center. Trainees and faculty continued their work on Saturday at the Leadership "Boost" with a full-day introductory session on leadership through a LEND lens. NH-ME LEND is pleased to welcome two new CHHS faculty members this Year: Meg Morgan (Communication Sciences and Disorders) and Sarah Smith (Occupational Therapy). Read more...

Aggie ACHIEVE at Texas A&M University is a comprehensive transition program (CTP) for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have exited high school. Aggie ACHIEVE provides an inclusive and immersive college education and equips students for employment in the community. Aggie ACHIEVE aligns coursework, internship opportunities, and extracurricular activities with each student’s academic interests and employment goals. Administration for Community Living (ACL) Launches Center to Improve Support for People with IDD/MH

ACLACL has awarded a cooperative agreement totaling an estimated $3.25 million over five years for a national technical assistance and resource center that will improve support for people with co-occurring intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and mental health needs so they can live and participate in their communities.
