Updates from the CU Pediatric PT Residency Program

The University of Colorado Pediatric Residency is a post-professional physical therapy residency program of the University of Colorado Physical Therapy Program in the School of Medicine and JFK Partners. The residency was established in 2011 under the Founding Director, Mary Jane K. Rapport, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, and it received initial accreditation in 2012. Mary Jane has also served as PT Discipline Director for over 20 years. At the end of January, Mary Jane will retire from the University of Colorado, and several months later she will be joining the faculty of the first DPT Program in Hawai’i opening at Hawai’i Pacific University. She has made invaluable contributions to the training of PT residents and LEND fellows. She has also made numerous programmatic contributions to JFK Partners. I truly appreciate her not only as a stellar professional, but also as a wonderful, kind, and compassionate person. She will be greatly missed.
The new Residency Director will be Meghan Hernandez, PT, DPT, PCS. She is the first graduate of the residency program and has been involved in the program as a clinical mentor for our early intervention clinical practice setting since transitioning from Resident to faculty. She has developed strong teaching and clinical skills and has assumed leadership positions through the years.
The program will remain the same with the mission to provide a comprehensive program of didactic, clinical, and professional experiences to develop pediatric physical therapist specialists. Through a variety of clinical experiences, educational excellence, exposure to research and active engagement in scholarship, teaching opportunities, professional and community service, and participation in collaborative teamwork, it is anticipated that residents will become future leaders in the field. The University of Colorado Pediatric Residency Program was re-accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) as a post-professional residency program for physical therapists in pediatrics on May 31, 2018. The current reaccreditation will continue for a period of ten (10) years until September 30, 2028.
