AUCD's Children's Mental Health Champions Project Extended for the 2021-2022 Year

AUCD's Children's Mental Health Champions Project Extended for the 2021-2022 Year

The Children's Mental Health Champions project has been extended another year accepting two new champions representing Montana and New Hampshire. A total of 12 champions representing American Samoa, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and South Dakota will serve in 2021-2022. This effort is made possible by AUCD’s National Center on Disability in Public Health through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The 2020-2021 Champions completed their respective projects and many will continue their work during the second year. Read more...

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) has expanded its National Center on Disability in Public Health efforts with the funding of two, one-year pilot studies using administrative data to evaluate "child find" early identification systems in Indiana and Minnesota. Show-Me College to Build Better Resources for College-Bound Students with IDDMore and more students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are going to college,  thanks to legislation like the Individuals with Disabilities ACT of 1975 and the 2008 Higher Education Opportunity Act, which authorized the creation of comprehensive transition and postsecondary programs, and made financial aid available. The Show-Me College website is being developed to provide information and resources about college-going opportunities in Missouri for students, families, educators and counselors. Read more...

Growing Self-Advocacy in the HeartlandSince 2014, the Center Disabilities and Development (Iowa’s UCEDD) has actively participated in a collaborative known as the Heartland Self-Advocacy Resource Network (HSRN). Iowa teamed up with UCEDDs from three other midwestern states—Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri—to grow self-advocacy movements in the region. Read more...

The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute introduces a new project: Merge. The project will strengthen the existing training framework serving Kentuckians with co-occurring mental health, and intellectual and developmental disabilities (MHIDD). UNH IOD to Lead Development of New Children's Behavioral Health Resource Center

The NH Executive Council approved a $4.3 million, three-year contract to the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability (IOD) to develop a new Children’s Behavioral Health Resource Center (CBHRC). Working in collaboration with other institutions, family groups, providers, and youth and families, the CBHRC will strengthen the network of behavioral health supports for children across NH. Sixty-one million adults in America live with a disability as of 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Disabilities come in many forms and are essentially any condition, mentally or physically, affecting one’s ability to complete certain activities. According to a 2019 American Community Survey posted by the U.S. Census Bureau, 6% of children in Louisiana have a disability. Read more...

$17 Million Grant Contracts in Autism and Behavior Awarded to Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) TRIAD

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (VKC TRIAD) was awarded two grant contracts by Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) totaling $17 million. The grant contracts enable TRIAD to continue its 22-year partnership with TDOE by providing professional development and behavior intervention services across the state. Read more...

Telehealth and Individuals with IDD: Challenges and Best-Practices

The WITH Foundation announced a $50,000 award to the Institute on Disability for a one-year initiative to investigate best practices for offering telehealth care to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)The COVID-19 pandemic limited access to care and increased reliance on telehealth rather than in-person office visits. While telehealth reduces some obstacles to care (e.g., transportation), it presents other challenges. Read more...

Dr. Vinodh Bhoopathi., an Assistant Professor of Public Health and Community Dentistry at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry, a dentist certified by the American Board of Dental Public Health, is leading a study focusing on oral health complications and utilization of dental care services among several high-risk groups: adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), Other Developmental Disabilities (ODDs), and Obesity. MI-LEND Team Develops Telehealth Module for National Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) Core Curriculum

In 2020, the Michigan Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (MI-LEND) was selected to be part of an AUCD and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) project focusing on telehealth. The goal of the project was ultimately to support both providers and families to access telehealth and other distance care services for pediatric care. Read more...

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) UCEDD Community Advisory Council Crafts and Approves VKC Equity Statement

During a 2020 Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (VKC) Community Advisory Council (CAC) meeting, VKC director Jeffrey Neul, M.D., Ph.D., asked the group to help come up with a plan to increase the diversity of the VKC in a manner to better reflect the communities it serves. The CAC moved Neul's charge forward and formed a Diversity Workgroup, chaired by CAC member Shana Crispin and comprised of CAC members (individuals with disabilities, parents, disability agencies) and VKC UCEDD leadership and staff. The Mark Chaffin Center for Healthy Development, a Georgia State University research center housed in the School of Public Health, has been chosen as the future home for the Georgia Association for Infant Mental Health (GA-AIMH). The center will be the first umbrella organization to house GA-AIMH.

Earlier this semester, Iowa LEND trainees, faculty and staff traveled to the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center in Des Moines, Iowa.  The Center serves as the home of the Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement at Drake University.The trainees enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the work of the Harkin Institute, and about the significant legacy of former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, from Joseph Jones, the Executive Director of the Harkin Institute.
