OAR Offers Autism Webinars on Safety, Self-Determination, and Transportation

The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is hosting three free webinar events in the coming months on the topics of crisis safety planning, self-determination, and travel training. The first, Seminar in Crisis Safety Planning for the ASD Population, will be presented by Scott Fowler on Thursday, April 9 at 11a.m. ET. Fowler will discuss wandering and elopement, working with first responders, seclusions and restraints, and bullying in the school environment. Both professionals and parents will come away with best-practice tools to support children and teens with ASD. Register for Seminar in Crisis Safety Planning for the ASD Population here.

The next webinar will be presented by autism specialist Deborah Hammer and members of her self-determination club on Tuesday, April 28 at 11a.m. ET. The webinar, titled Self-Determination: Tips for Including Students in Their Education and Transition Planning, will introduce the fundamental concepts of self-determination for students with autism and related disabilities, with input from student members of the self-determination club she facilitates. The presentation will cover how to teach these concepts, power-standards for IEP goals, how to include students in the IEP process, and other strategies for supporting students in developing self-determination skills. The third webinar, Transportation: Options and Concerns for Those Living with ASD, will be presented by Earnst Ilang-Ilang on Thursday, June 25 at 11 a.m. ET. This webinar will discuss transportation services, challenges, and remedies for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ilang-Ilang will cover increasing safety and security for people with ASD learning to use public transit and share travel training procedures that can be utilized for this population.
