New IDDRC Reporter: The Role of IDDRC Network in Recent Developments in the Treatment of Urea Cycle Defects
AUCD publishes annually a newsletter called the IDDRC Reporter summarizing the role of the Intellectual and Developmental Disability Research Centers (IDDRC), which are funded by the National Institute for Child Health and Development (NICHD), network in research developments. Innovations and Best Practices in Medicaid Managed Long-Term Services and Supports (MLTSS)
Many states are working to move the management of Medicaid and Medicaid Waiver programs to MCOs. Two new documents written by Sarah Swanson of the Munroe Meyer Institute and published by AUCD provide specific examples of new programs developed through this systems change, highlight states that are implementing quality programming in their LTSS programs, and outline ways that disability stakeholders can be involved. WIHD President and CEO, Dr. Susan Fox, Receives Two Prestigious Awards (NY UCEDD)
WIHD's President and CEO, Dr. Susan Fox, was recently honored with two prestigious Westchester County awards celebrating her positive impact on the community. Dr. Fox was selected as one of the recipients of the "2019 Westchester Power 100 Award" which highlights individuals who are shaping the county's future. ICI Announces New Director (MA UCEDD)
Cindy Thomas (MS, CRC) has been selected to serve as the director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI). Ms. Thomas has been an integral part of the ICI for over 30 years, significantly contributing to its growth during that time. Prior to this appointment, she held the role of associate director and then of interim director, while leading the employment services and capacity building teams.Read more...
Amy Grattan Named Director of Sherlock Center (RI UCEDD)
Amy Grattan, an expert in special education with a focus on early childhood, has been appointed director of the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities at Rhode Island College. Grattan "brings a breadth of knowledge and experience in the field of disability and special education," according to a Sherlock Center statement on her appointment. Grattan will help ensure that "Rhode Island's citizens with disabilities have a strong and vibrant advocate" and will "strengthen the many positive collaborative relationships with Rhode Island school systems and community partners," the statement said. Dr. Jeff Brosco Receives 2019 MCHB's Directors Award (FL UCEDD/LEND)
Jeffrey Brosco, MD, PhD, Associate Director, Mailman Center for Child Development, was the recipient of the 2019 MCHB prestigious Director's Award from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The MCHB Director's award is presented to selected individuals who have made noteworthy national level contributions to the health of infants, mothers, children, adolescents, and children with special health care needs. Va-LEND Integral Component of New Physical Therapy Residency Program
Va LEND is now partnering with the new Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency Program at Virginia Commonwealth University. VCU joins 26 other pediatric physical therapy residency programs nationwide. The current cohort of LEND trainees includes two pediatric PTs enrolled in the new yearlong residency. Dr. Terry Solano, the director of the residency program and a former LEND trainee, sees Va-LEND participation as an ideal fit for the pediatric PT residents. Read more...
WVU More than 425 turn out for Trunk or Treat at MMI (NE UCEDD/LEND)
More than 425 people attended the third annual Halloween Trunk or Treat at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, braving wintry conditions to take part in the event designed to be inclusive and accessible for children with developmental disabilities or complex health care needs. MMI faculty and staff, community partners such as WhyArts and the Ronald McDonald House, and the Student Alliance for People of All Abilities (SAPA) decorated trunks in themes ranging from Harry Potter to Maleficent to the Cookie Monster. South Dakota Center for Disabilities Holds 2019 Symposium (SD UCEDD/LEND)
The University of South Dakota Center for Disabilities (SD UCEDD/LEND) recently held its 2019 Symposium & the JAM Sept. 16-17 in Sioux Falls, SD. The conference was a great success, with almost 200 professionals, self-advocates, parents, family members, students, and community members in attendance. The Center for Disabilities' 2019 Symposium was developed to bring the community together to encourage learning, leadership, and innovation as well as an opportunity for building connections toward improving the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. My Voice. My Participation. My Board. Concludes Seventh Cohort (GA UCEDD)
The final meeting of the seventh cohort of My Voice. My Participation. My Board (MVMPMB) was held in Augusta, GA. Eight individuals from throughout the Atlanta and middle Georgia area graduated from this cohort. This gathering was the conclusion of a three-part, multi-day training on self-advocacy, which focused on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) learning how to be effective and engaged members of board of directors and advisory councils. Student Highlight, Adonay Mendoza (TX UCEDD)
Adonay N. Mendoza, B.S. Texas A&M University Adonay Mendoza was born in Houston, Texas but raised in El Salvador. His father brought he and his brother back to the United States to get a sound education at the beginning of his 6th grade year. He remembers having a hard time understanding the new content and teachers because of the language barrier and previous lack of adequate education. "Seeing of my classmates struggling because they could not understand some of the things presented, and how patient, loving, and caring teachers were toward them, helped me develop a keen passion for becoming a bilingual teacher." The Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities Hosts a Project SEARCH Intern (MD UCEDD)
The Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute recently hosted its first Project SEARCH intern. Project SEARCH is an internationally recognized program, which seeks to secure competitive employment for individuals with disabilities. Over the past month, the MCDD interviewed candidates for Kennedy Krieger's Project SEARCH program. The MCDD ultimately decided to hire Cole Slusher as the MCDD's first Project SEARCH intern. Ariel Schwartz, a former LEND fellow from Boston LEND at the Massachusetts ICI/UCEDD received this year's CORE Trainee Research Award. Kansas LEND Post Doctoral Fellow Wins Anne Ruidiger Award!
Alice Zhang, PhD, bcba, LBA was honored with the Anne Ruidiger Award at the 2019 Awards Gala at the Annual Meeting of the Association for University Centers on Disability (AUCD). Dr. Zhang is a second year post doctoral fellow at Kansas LEND, and during her training has contributed to the program in a number of ways, including providing culturally responsive clinical services, contributing to didactic coursework and grant writing efforts. Former OHSU LEND trainees, Hannah Sanford-Keller and Bethany Sloane are now faculty at the Institute on Development and Disability (IDD) and UCEDD at Oregon Health & Science University. They work to bridge diversity efforts across OHSU centers and programs with the broader University and the AUCD network. Their roles include serving as co-leads of the IDD Diversity Committee. I am Archy Gomba, the AUCD international fellow at the Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa’s UCEDD in Iowa City, Iowa. Life in Iowa is incredible, and I am super excited to be here! I began my first week at the Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), with a welcome reception and orientation. ICI Implements U.S.-Japan Symposium "Inclusion Matters" in Tokyo (MA UCEDD/LEND)
Tokyo-based staffer, Dr. Heike Boeltzig-Brown, and Miwa Tanabe, both of the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) based at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston), organized "Inclusion Matters," a U.S.-Japan Symposium that attracted more than 100 attendees. Funded by the U.S. Embassy Tokyo and hosted at the Nippon Foundation's headquarters in downtown Tokyo, attendees included leaders in disability and career services from top universities across Japan, business leaders, major media outlets and postsecondary students with disabilities (SWD).
