The MCHB Director's Award in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is presented to an individual who has noteworthy national level contributions to the health of infants, mothers, children, adolescents and children with special health care needs (CSHCN). This prestigious award is a well-deserved recognition of Dr. Avila contribution to the MCH field.
The 2019 Sister Elizabeth Candon Distinguished Service Award is presented to a woman who has shown evidence of promoting and working toward the advancement of women in higher education and involvement at the national, regional, state, and local levels in related activities. Dr. Avila focus on equity and justice in behavioral health at both the state and national levels has been recognized with a variety of awards, including, among others, the 2016 Child Mind Institute National Change Maker Local Hero Award, the 2016 Association of University Centers on Disabilities National Multicultural Council Leadership in Diversity National Award.
Dr. Avila is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of the Vermont Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (VTLEND) Program at the University of Vermont (UVM) Larner College of Medicine. She has been involved in numerous federal programs related to substance abuse prevention, mental health promotion, maternal and child health, disability and advocacy, and addressing and eliminating disparities and inequities. She is a member of the Vermont Governor's Council for Families and Children's Prevention Programs, the Vermont Governor's Workforce Equity and Diversity Council, and co-chair of the National Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Multicultural Council.
