September 9, 2019

Mississippi's UCEDD, the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) was represented at the 2019 National Wheelchair Softball World Series (WSWS) by staff members, Sylvester Crosby and Robbie Sullivan, who joined their Deep South Hurricanes teammates to participate in the international competition in Kansas City, Kansas. Eighteen teams were welcomed to Kansas City August 15-17, 2019 to compete for the championship trophy and year-long bragging rights.

Following the Hurricanes' fifth place finish, Crosby, who plays first base, said "though we didn't win, we represented ourselves well, and look forward to winning it all next year." Hurricanes' second baseman Sullivan added, "The outcome wasn't what we wanted, but we came closer as a team. We're looking forward to bigger and better things next season."

Though softball season has ended, Crosby and Sullivan will stay busy as they shift their attention to wheelchair basketball and tennis and work with their Hurricanes teammates to prepare to host the 2020 WSWS in Biloxi, Mississippi.
