As you begin the current academic year and look forward to a new cohort of emerging leaders, we recognize the importance of delivering information and resources that may be timely to MCH training programs. It is our hope that you find the resources contained in this newsletter useful in supporting the work of your faculty, staff and trainees.

You'll notice that the newsletter sections mirror the AUCD Strategic Map priority areas. In doing so, we wish to highlight network resources and efforts that guide our collective work and mission.

Grow Diverse and Skilled Leaders

This section will highlight resources / opportunities for leadership at all levels by cultivating and equipping leaders with the skills to engage communities and improve systems.

Announcing our 2019-2020 Emerging Leaders Interns! 

We are pleased to announce the selection of two (2) AUCD Emerging Leaders Interns for the 2019-2020 training year. These individuals will serve as visible ambassadors to the broader AUCD network, interacting with AUCD staff at all levels and the AUCD Board of Directors' Emerging Leaders Representative. Trainee Liaison Opportunities Available!

As you begin the current academic year, we encourage you to identify a trainee to serve as a trainee liaison. This is a unique opportunity for a trainee to engage in information sharing and dialogue on trainee-related matters with other trainees across the country! Read more here. 

2019 AUCD Board: Emerging Leader Position - Nominations due September 9

The AUCD Board of Directors is seeking nominations for an individual from the network's Emerging Leader Community to fill the newly created Emerging Leader Board Member position. (* Note this is not the same as the Emerging Leader Intern.) The Emerging Leader Board Member will be a voting member on AUCD's national Board of Directors and serve as a representative of the Association and broader AUCD network. This position will bring the voice and perspective of the AUCD Emerging Leader Community, including but not limited to trainees and early career professionals in the network.

"Growing Skilled Leaders" Workshop - Resources from LEND Directors Meeting

Using the updated Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Leadership Competencies as a framework, participants in the 2019 July LEND Directors Meeting shared innovative didactic, research, clinical, and community-oriented strategies that their programs are using to teach each of the Competencies to trainees. Throughout the year, we'll be releasing new ITAC Training Toolbox entries on a quarterly basis that expand upon these strategies.

Including the AUCD Trainee Orientation Modules in your Curriculum - Webinar recording available soon

As the new academic year begins, many programs/centers are beginning to think about how to orient their trainees to the AUCD network. Developed in 2017, the AUCD Trainee Orientation Modules provide information about the structure and purpose of AUCD, how trainees "fit" in the network, connecting with experts from across the country, getting involved by contributing their experiences, and growing as leaders. The Modules are designed to be flexible, so that any program/center can embed them in their training curriculum wherever and whenever appropriate. During this webinar, first in our "Training in Action" series, presenters from LENDs and UCEDDs shared their experiences of using this resource as part of their existing orientation process for trainees. Model Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

This section will highlight resources / opportunities to reach out, engage, and include underrepresented groups to advance our knowledge and impact.

Milestone Tracker App - New Spanish-Language Video

The CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." campaign has developed a new Spanish-language video to promote the Milestone Tracker app to Spanish-speaking families. Check out the video, along with sample social media posts in Spanish and English for promotion, here. 

AUCD's Diversity & Inclusion Toolkit - New Resources! 

The Diversity & Inclusion Toolkit is one way AUCD provides resources and strategies to "champion and model diversity, equity, and inclusion." AUCD is continually searching for resources to make available at the Diversity & Inclusion website. Among the recently highlighted resources are:

This section will highlight resources / opportunities that increase the use of evidence-based, culturally-responsive, and inclusive policies and practices.

Autism CARES Connections

2019 Autism CARES Meeting - Archive Available

The meeting materials have been archived and are now available on the 2019 Autism CARES event page of AUCD's website. This includes:

  • Final agenda and related supplemental documents.
  • Presentation slides from the plenary and concurrent sessions.
  • E-posters from symposia that addressed each of the three meeting strands: increasing equity, improving systems performance, and achieving population-level outcomes.
  • Notes (i.e. major takeaways) from the Thursday "Conversations that Matter" and Friday topical/regional small group discussions.

2019-2020 Act Early Ambassador Goals

AUCD's LEND and DBP programs have a strong history of collaborating to achieve common goals alongside Act Early Ambassadors. Many of these programs have found creative ways to engage trainees/fellows with the work of their state's Act Early Ambassador. In the spirit of supporting and strengthening these relationships, we want to share with you this document containing the work plan goals for Ambassadors across the country so that you can see what the Ambassador in your state is working on. AMCHP's State Systems Grant: Eight Years in Review

The Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) is pleased to share a new interactive resource called "Learn the Signs. Act Early. AMCHP's State Systems Grant: Eight Years in Review." This resource explores strategies for improving state capacity and strengthening state and community systems for early identification and coordination of services for children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities (ASD/DD) as part of the Learn the Signs. Act Early. (LTSAE) state systems grants. It can be used not only to educate public health professionals, partners, and stakeholders on different implementation strategies to impact services and systems of care for children with ASD/DD and their families, but also to inform themselves and others of challenges faced and lessons learned that they may be able to apply in their work.

2019 MCH Workforce Development Grantee Virtual Meeting: Working with Communities and Systems
October 3, 2019; 1-4 PM ET

This annual meeting is an opportunity for Division of Maternal and Child Health Workforce Development (DMCHWD) grantees to convene and network around a cross-cutting topic of interest. The meeting will review the MCH Leadership Competency 11: "Working with Communities and Systems." Register here.

Pediatric Care Coordination Curriculum
An Interprofessional Resource to Effectively Engage Patients and Families in Achieving Optimal Child Health Outcomes, 2nd Edition

The National Resource Center for Patient/Family-Centered Medical Home (NRC PFCMH) and the National Center for Care Coordination Technical Assistance are pleased to announce the launch of the Pediatric Care Coordination Curriculum, 2nd Edition. Grounded in American Academy of Pediatrics policy, the curriculum is designed to build capacity among diverse stakeholders through the following activities:

  • Effective implementation of key components of care coordination
  • Collaborative communication within inter-professional care teams
  • Investment in technology solutions

The curriculum also provides tools to measure care coordination activities and support continuous quality improvement efforts. Conduct and Apply Research and Share Knowledge

This section will highlight resources / opportunities that engage the disability community to identify priorities and conduct research with the goal of accessible presentation of information.

AUCD's Council on Research and Evaluation (CORE)

The purpose of CORE is to serve as the representative voice of the research and evaluation activities within the AUCD network. Childcare providers' attitudes, knowledge, and practice related to developmental monitoring to promote early identification and referral

Findings in a recent article from LEND network leaders suggest childcare providers may be well poised to identify delays and make referrals early through developmental monitoring but need additional knowledge and tools to do so effectively. https://doi.org/10.1080/03004430.2019.1626373

Resources and Announcements

2019-2020 ITAC Technical Assistance Priorities and Activities Plan

This plan was informed by many sources and perspectives, including but not limited to: requests from NCC reports and recent prior needs assessments, our Project Advisory Committee, site visits, AUCD/MCHB coordination, and ongoing dialogues with Directors, faculty, and trainees. This was summarized during the 2019 July LEND Directors Meeting, followed by a detailed discussion about these (and other) topics. We didn't intend for this to be an exhaustive list - for example, we still very much plan on providing assistance with respect to data management and reporting! We're generally highlighting new initiatives or current ones with updated emphases. View the plan here.

E-Learning Module: "Autism CARES Act 101"

The Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), in partnership with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), is pleased to share the "Autism CARES Act 101" e-Learning module that was previewed at last month's meeting.

This free, self-paced module addresses key facets of the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) Act, including: grassroots and legislative origins, how it has evolved since 2006, and resulting federally-funded programming. It also delves into the impact that the Autism CARES Act has had on services and systems that support autistic individuals and their families. The module features brief video interviews with self-advocates, researchers, and public health professionals about their experiences supporting and/or implementing legislative priorities.

The ITAC team is pleased to announce the promotion of Christine Liao, MSW to Program Manager! We look forward to having Christine continue to support network members in her new role, and we will soon announce the hire of a new Program Specialist after a comprehensive review of candidates.
