The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities Partners to Offer Transition Programs for High School Students with Disabilities (MT UCEDD)

March 7, 2019

Montana high school students with disabilities now have two opportunities to explore and prepare for postsecondary education through the Movin' On in Montana Summer Program and Club.

The Movin' On in Montana Summer Program is a chance for high school students to experience college life, learn about disability rights, and connect with academic and community resources.  Students stay in residence halls, eat on campus, attend college lectures, participate in workshops, interact with college students of all abilities and explore recreational activities.  The free program will take place July 9th-12th at the University of Montana.

Since 2015, over 65 high school students from all over Montana have attended the Movin' On Summer Program.  One former student said the program, "opened up my eyes to the endless possibilities that college has to offer. I found out that there is so much more than just classes, there are groups and so much more."

The Movin' On in Montana Club offers another opportunity for students to further their exploration of life after high school.  The Club is open to all Montana high school students with disabilities.  Participants connect with University of Montana student mentors through online educational activities to develop self-advocacy and leadership skills while learning about the differences between high school and college life.

Movin' On in Montana is a collaborative project of the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities and the University of Montana Disability Services for Students office. It is funded, in part, by the Montana DPHHS Disability Employment & Transitions Division.
