MCHB Minute - December 2018

December 13, 2018

Greetings from MCHB!

As we near the end of 2018, we want to thank our Autism CARES programs for all that you do to improve the care and outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DDs).  Our collective efforts are increasing access to early and appropriate developmental screening, diagnostic, and intervention services, improving the effectiveness of support services available to youth making the transition to adulthood and enhancing care coordination and service delivery for children and adolescents with ASD and other DDs.

Over the past few months, we had the opportunity to engage across the CARES network through a series of virtual activities exploring the topic of ableism.  Thank you all for your active participation in both the planning of these webinars as well as your participation in the dialogue to discuss current activities, emerging trends, and opportunities for meaningful collaboration to address this challenging issue.

Across our CARES grantee network, we continue to do so much in advancing the field in improving the health and well-being of children, adolescents and young adults with ASD/DD.  Thank you for your continued work in:

  • Expanding the reach of our programs by enhancing the capacity of health care professionals and through the use of innovative modalities including telehealth;
  • Preparing interdisciplinary professionals including families and self-advocates in providing comprehensive, coordinated continuum of care for children, adolescents and young adults with ASD/DD;
  • Advancing the field with cutting edge research findings to improve the health and well-being of children, adolescents and young adults with ASD/DD;
  • Supporting families in navigating the complex health care system.

In the very near future, the CARES evaluation findings, highlighting the great work and impact of our programs will be shared with you.

Thank you to all of our CARES programs for these efforts and all that you do for children, youth and their families.  On behalf of MCHB, have a very happy holiday season and best wishes for the new year.
