Child Neurology Society Honors Kennedy Krieger Institute Pediatrician for Excellence in Physician Training (MD LEND)

At its recent annual meeting in Chicago, the Child Neurology Society presented Bruce K. Shapiro, MD, vice president, training at Kennedy Krieger Institute, with the Blue Bird Circle Training Director Award.
Launched in 2013, the Blue Bird Circle Training Director Award is presented to a current or former child neurology residency program director who has demonstrated leadership and vision in program development, curriculum development, innovation in teaching methods or training requirements and who inspires trainees and colleagues alike in the practice of child neurology.
In addition to his role as vice president, training at Kennedy Krieger, Dr. Shapiro serves as the director of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopment and Other Related Disabilities (LEND) Program Dr. Shapiro leads the design and implementation of Kennedy Krieger's interdisciplinary training program, which has been in existence since the founding of the Institute and provides training experiences to approximately 200 trainees per year from 14 core disciplines. He also is director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins University Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residency Program and is responsible for the coordination of the largest and most established neurodevelopmental disabilities medical residency training program in the U.S.
In addition to training other program directors, Dr. Shapiro's teaching extends to those in practice as program director for the Spectrum of Developmental Disabilities, a continuing education course that focuses on interdisciplinary aspects of neurodevelopmental and related disorders. In its 41st year, this annual program is jointly sponsored by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Division of Child Development, Department of Pediatrics and Kennedy Fellows Association, Kennedy Krieger Institute.
Dr. Shapiro has worked at Kennedy Krieger for over 40 years, has wide-ranging interests in neurodevelopmental disorders and has participated in research to identify, assess and treat these disorders. He is a member of the editorial board of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The Blue Circle Training Program Director Award is funded by a grant from The Blue Bird Circle, an organization of women volunteering to support pediatric neurology. Nominations are reviewed by peers including members from the Child Neurology Society and the Professors of Child Neurology. Previous recipients of the award are Harvey Singer, MD (2013), Steve Leber, MD (2014) Rob Rust (2015), David Urion (2016) and Sid Gospe (2017).
