Course Description

For 25 years, "Photovoice" has involved people with disabilities, patients, youth, families and communities in representing their lives, point of view, and experience using photos and captions. Photovoice is a participatory approach to communication about health, healthcare, and daily lives in clinical and other settings to encourage dialogue and mutual learning. Photovoice generates powerful data (photographs, captions)thatengage clients, clinicians, evaluators, and the public in identifying opportunities for change, fostering knowledge and awareness, and helping people to feel their 'voices' are heard.

Upon completion of this course, participants will receive a Training Certificate and have the knowledge, skills and tools to develop a Photovoice plan. The interactive online format provides hands-on experience with adapting Photovoice to clinical care, programming, evaluation, and research.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe issues faced by people with disabilities, in particular from acquired brain injury and other disabilities affecting physical function, cognition and behavior, in their lives and communities.
• List ways to engage individual clients and groups in a process of sharing experiences, lives, and expertise in clinical and other settings using Photovoice photographs and captions.
• List the steps of the Photovoice method, and options for adapting each step to different types of clients/participants, clinical settings, and contexts.
• Identify ethical issues around taking photographs in the community and strategies for ensuring the safety and confidentiality of patients/clients, clinical settings, programs, and communities.
• Describe strategies for interpreting Photovoice data (photographs, captions), engaging potential audiences (peers, family, other clinicians, clinical and other settings), engaging clients/participants in the interpretation process, and identifying implications for clinical care, treatment plans, programming, and policy.
• List strategies for sharing Photovoice learning outside the clinical or project setting that support empowerment of individual clients or groups and foster a sense of having a voice in their health, lives, and communities.
• Plan a Photovoice project/activity with individual patients/clients or groups of youth, patients, people with disabilities (from brain injury or other disability affecting physical function, cognition and behavior.
