The 17th annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting took place in Denver, CO. The Meeting welcomed around 1,000 diverse stakeholders nationwide to enhance the implementation of comprehensive state-based EHDI programs and expand opportunities for young children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The EHDI Meeting was organized by American Academy of Pediatrics, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: HRSA, Hands and Voices, and National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management at Utah State University.

The pre-EHDI LEND workshop, titled "Intersectionality of Culture and Diversity," was well-attended with over 90 trainees and faculty representing 17 programs. The workshop's objectives were to allow trainees to network with each other; consider the many aspects of culture in their clinical, research, and advocacy pursuits; and expose trainees to practical strategies related to cultural competence and building relationships with families. LEND trainees and faculty listened to a parent-led panel from diverse backgrounds discuss how their cultural background influenced their approaches to help their deaf and hard of hearing kids thrive. As a result of the panel, 100% of trainees responded that strongly agreed or agreed they learned more on how to establish and maintain effective family partnerships.

During the EHDI Meeting, students were able to present and share their work during the poster session. In fact, the top three student posters were all awarded to LEND trainees! They are:

  • Megan Bartoshuk, Stephanie Berry, Ashley McMillen, and Crystal Smaldone, from Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities in North Carolina, did a poster titled "Screening, Diagnosis, and Management of Hearing Loss in Children with Significant Cognitive Disabilities."
  • Aijiana Zanders, from JFK Partners in Colorado, did a poster titled "Do the Characteristics of Children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing with Additional Disabilities Differ by Race/Ethinicity or Other Demographic Factors?"
  • Chloe Pfeifer and Mary Franke, from Center for Child Health and Development in Kansas, did a poster titled, "Native American Hearing Education and Training Initiative."

AUCD's Interdisciplinary Technical Assistance Center on Autism and related Disabilities (ITAC) was pleased to provide scholarships of $500 each for six LEND audiology trainees. The six awarded trainees put together a PowerPoint slide presentation to share the value of the audiology discipline within LEND, and their main takeaways during the 2018 EHDI Meeting. Check out their PowerPoint slides on the top right of this page. They represent the following programs:

  • Arizona LEND (AZ);
