American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities - A Resource You Should Know About!

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Children with Disabilities (COCWD) is comprised of over 600 diverse physician members (eg, neurodevelopmental pediatricians, developmental and behavioral pediatricians, geneticists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physical medical and rehabilitation pediatricians, and general pediatricians) who care for or have an interest in children and youth with disabilities, including those with complex needs. The mission of the COCWD is as follows:
- to develop clinical guidance for the optimal care of children and youth with disabilities and support implementation;
- to educate pediatricians who care for children and youth with disabilities;
- to provide expertise and advocacy on local and national issues related to children and youth with disabilities;
- to create collaborations with partner organizations; and
- to provide opportunities for COCWD members to actively engage in all the above.
Members of the COCWD have the opportunity to become involved in educational programs, research, and policy development related to children and youth with disabilities. Specific membership benefits of the COCWD include the following:
- Subscription to a members-only email distribution list, which includes weekly information and opportunities of relevance to COCWD members.
- Educational offerings presented through the Academy's annual National Conference & Exhibition (NCE), including a Council program and business meeting.
- Opportunities to provide ideas and suggestions for future educational sessions at the NCE.
- Opportunities to serve as faculty on COCWD-sponsored educational sessions at the NCE and through other educational offerings of the Academy.
- Opportunities to contribute to the development and/or review of various Academy publications, including clinical reports, policy statements, technical reports, textbook chapters, and articles published through the Academy's consumer-facing Web site HealthyChildren.org.
- Connection to over 400 AAP Fellows in the field of disabilities, including general pediatrics, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, genetics, neurology, orthopedics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Physicians board certified in pediatrics, pediatric trainees (medical students, residents, fellowship trainees), pediatric physiatrists, and pediatric nurse practitioners are all eligible to join the COCWD. Neurodevelopmental and developmental/behavioral pediatrics fellowship trainees are also encouraged to join!
