Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates

Arkansas

Nutrition is for Everyone (NIFE) in Arkansas is continuing to plan and create their approach to year two of the NIFE grant. They are currently working on selecting Deputy Ambassadors and Nutrition Advocates for the grant year.

NIFE in Arkansas has finished their Disability Facility Nutrition Education curriculum to educate staff and family members on adequate nutrition information to care for people with disabilities. Their next step is to record a tutorial video to be posted online, in addition to the curriculum, for anyone in the state to access. They have multiple disability facilities that have agreed to make this nutrition education curriculum and video tutorial a mandatory training for employees.

Additionally, NIFE in Arkansas hosted an adapted Cooking Matters class at a local disability facility, BridgeWay, for adolescents ages 12-18 years. The participants enjoyed the class, stating that they felt more confident by building practical and healthy life skills in the kitchen.

Finally, NIFE in Arkansas is working with the Disability and Health grant and Special Olympics Arkansas to host a large training event for the adapted Cooking Matters classes at the end of October. This will allow a large group of individuals to be trained on how to offer these classes and extend their reach throughout the state.

Louisiana

The Louisiana Nutrition Ambassador, Lauren Griffiths, is in the beginning stages of working with Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) on a number of nutrition-related projects such as disability-inclusive structural updates to SHFB's community garden space and the development of inclusive garden curriculums for children and veterans. Additionally, Lauren is helping the SHFB team to include a disability perspective in their presentation on food insecurity to state and federal legislators in Lafayette later this month.

Lauren has also been working closely with Lisa Staples, Masters of Public Health student at LSUHSC and former educator (pictured), to offer technical assistance for her program Little Bitty Learning (LBL). LBL targets vulnerable families and children enrolled in a local Early Head Start center by offering weekly classes on health-related, family-focused topics such as positive household routines and child screen time. Lauren is helping Lisa successfully integrate nutrition education into the 10-week curriculum where parents will learn healthy cooking skills while their children are engaged in physical activity.

Finally, the Louisiana project continues to coordinate Cooking Matters courses through the Arc and other organizations serving individuals with disabilities, and two new courses are expected to start soon.

Mississippi

Taylor Carley admitted he had not eaten many fruits and vegetables the August day he interviewed Alma Ellis, Nutrition Ambassador for the Nutrition is for Everyone project in Mississippi. Taylor is the host of Chit Chat Thursday with Taylor, a monthly video series produced by the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS). Taylor is IDS' first self-advocate, and his Chit Chat program highlights self-advocacy, services and successes. Taylor, who has been working at IDS for two years, is also the Nutrition is for Everyone Mississippi project's first Deputy Ambassador. Taylor is responsible for media assistance for the project, particularly social media. He'll also assist with project events. There are two Chit Chat episodes featuring Nutrition is for Everyone. View the shows on the Chit Chat channel on  YouTube, or visit the Chit Chat Facebook  page.

The word about Nutrition is for Everyone Mississippi (NIFE MS) project has been spread in other ways during August. The Nutrition Ambassador had networking meetings with an instructor from the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi, the program coordinator for the Farmers Market Nutrition Program at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and the preventive health coordinator in the Office of Health Promotion and Health Equity at the Mississippi State Department of Health. All three professionals provided information about nutrition services in Mississippi and agreed to serve in an advisory capacity for the NIFE MS project. A new NIFE MS flyer has been completed and is available on the new project website. Additionally, information was emailed August 3, to more than 600 members of the Family Health Notes listserv, a monthly electronic newsletter for the Mississippi Family to Family Health Information and Education Center. Flyers were also handed out and project information shared with participants at three annual DD Network Community Forums held in Holly Spring, August 22, Meridian, Aug. 24, and Natchez, Aug. 30.
