AUCD's Andy Imparato Visits the Pacific

AUCD's Andy Imparato Visits the Pacific

For the past ten days, AUCD Executive Director Andy Imparato has been visiting disability organizations and meetings in the South Pacific, hosted by Tafaimamao Lefu Tua Tupuola and Kiriko Takahashi of the American Samoa UCEDD (Ucedd Ascc). He has met with people with disabilities, families, and numerous staff working on disability issues throughout the South Pacific. Andy also participated in the Pacific Women with Disabilities Regional Forum, spoke at the 5th Pacific Regional Conference on Disability (#PRDC2017), heard from international speakers including the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, learned about the Incheon Strategy outlining 10 goals for the Asia-Pacific region related to people with disabilities, and met with leaders from agencies throughout American Samoa to learn and plan how we can all work together to create a strong and inclusive future for all people. AUCD Welcomes John Tschida as Associate Executive Director for Research and PolicyThe Executive Director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, Andrew Imparato, announced today that John Tschida has been hired as the Associate Executive Director for Research and Policy. Mr. Tschida was most recently the director of the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) for the past three years. John fills the position most recently held by Michael Gamel-McCormick who is moving to the U.S. Senate to be the Disability Policy Director in the office of Sen. Dr. Bruce L. Keisling Appointed Executive Director of the UTHSC Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities and Shainberg Chair of Excellence in Developmental DisabilitiesBruce Keisling has been appointed the executive director of the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities and Shainberg Chair of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He has served as associate director of the center for nine years and is the director / principal investigator of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities program. Dr. Keisling is a clinical psychologist and associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Read more...

SC UCEDD/Assistive Technology Program Director Wins Highest State AwardDr. Carol Page, Director of the SC Assistive Technology Program at the Center for Disability Resources was recently honored with the highest award for Speech/Language Pathologist in South Carolina. She received the 2017 Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement on February 3rd.

Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports Survey

The Arc, in collaboration with the Research and Training Center on Community Living at the University of Minnesota (MN LEND), has launched the 2017 Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports Survey which seeks to capture perceptions of family caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) on a range of life-span issues. We are inviting people aged 18 years or older who provide primary un/paid and frequent support to a family member with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) living in the United States and its Territories to provide feedback on their experiences.  Read more...

Wisconsin UCEDD Works with Governor Scott Walker to End Wait Lists for Children with DisabilitiesWisconsin UCEDD staff Elizabeth Hecht, Specialist for Public Policy, was invited to attend Governor Scott Walker's 2017 Budget Address when he introduced his budget proposal for $39 million to eliminate wait lists for children with developmental, physical and emotional disabilities eligible for the Children's HCBS waivers. Hecht has worked with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, elected officials, advocates and families for 15 years toward this goal. AIDD grants to advance Family Support under Title II of the Developmental Disability Act of 2000 helped build the family leadership infrastructure that led to this current success. Read more...

NH-ME LEND Selected to Participate in MCH Diversity & Health Equity Peer Learning Collaborative The New Hampshire-Maine Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (NH-ME LEND) Program was recently selected to participate in the 2017 Diversity & Health Equity Peer Learning Collaborative, supported by the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Bureau, Division of MCH Workforce Development. The Division of MCH Workforce Development provides national leadership and direction in educating and training future leaders in maternal and child health. Special emphasis is placed on the development and implementation of interprofessional, family-centered, community-based and culturally competent systems of care across the entire life course. On a snowy February morning, the Jackson family from St. Albans, West Virginia traveled to Morgantown to be seen by the Feeding & Swallowing Clinic team at the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED). Maxwell Jackson is the Feeding & Swallowing Clinic's 1000th visit, a milestone moment for the WVU CED and a truly special little boyThe Feeding & Swallowing Clinic was started in 1993 at HealthSouth and was formalized when it moved to the WVU CED in 1996. The clinic not only sees clients with feeding and swallowing disorders, it serves as a training site for WVU students from various programs. Iowa LEND Trip to Puerto Rico

Iowa LEND Trip to Puerto RicoLast month six Iowa LEND trainees from Iowa's UCEDD flew to San Juan as part of a new collaborative partnership project with the University of Puerto Rico UCEDD to provide training and cultural exchange opportunities. The project will focus on cultural and linguistic competency as well as a public health perspective on childhood disability in Puerto Rico and associated services, resources and supports. Research and policy projects may be developed beyond the exchange program. This reciprocal exchange experience promises to be of great value to LEND trainees in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) network programs and the University of Puerto Rico UCEDD.

IU Report Guides State Department of Education on Education Evaluation Reform Efforts (IN UCEDD)On the heels of a recently published white paper proposing improvements to Indiana's teacher evaluation system, the Indiana Teacher Appraisal and Support System has released a four-year analysis of the implementation and impact of educator evaluation reform in Indiana. "Indiana's Teacher Evaluation System: A Four-Year Analysis," a report submitted to the Indiana State Board of Education, is part of an ongoing study by INTASS, a project of the Center on Education and Lifelong Learning at IU Bloomington. This is the conclusion of our series about cultural brokering in the Vietnamese community.To increase equity and access while respecting the unique cultural values of families from diverse communities, service providers must reach out to and reciprocally engage parents. UC UCEDD takes part in Cincinnati Reelabilities Film Festival to Reach 12,000+ with Films on DisabilityThis year, March 9-12 marks the fourth year University of Cincinnati UCEDD will participate in the Cincinnati ReelAbilities Film Festival. ReelAbilities presents award-winning films by and about people with disabilities, while also planning initiatives around town related to accessibility and inclusion. The film has grown exponentially in recent years to expand to year-round programming that has led to city-wide discussions around employment of people with disabilities to school-based film screenings to promote inclusion of students with disabilities. 2016-17 MNLEND Fellow Publishes!Jack Reagan, current 2016-17 MNLEND Fellow recently co-published a brief based on the FINDS 2010 data surveying family caregivers. The data he analyzed within the FINDS survey focused on the emotional and physical markers affecting family caregivers. These markers have both positive and negative association to their related outcomes for family caregivers. He helped assess how caregivers reported their respective health status based on these positive or negative markers. Within the caregiver group, he focused on sibling caregivers for this brief. He looked at how the reported disability group effects reported health status, stress levels, demographics, and living arrangement. Read more...

Section 508 Comes to the University of Hawaii (HI UCEDD), College of EducationThe Media Center at the Center on Disability Studies is leading the way for compliant digital content for the University of Hawaii, College of Education (COE). Recognizing compliance with federal accessibility regulations as a need, the Dean of the COE contacted the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) for their guidance and expertise. With 15+ years of experience, the CDS Media Center (www.media.cds.hawaii.edu) has created accessible websites and digital content for CDS projects and core activities. In this newly proposed endeavor, the Media Center presented a course of action that included, collaboration with the COE training team, integration of the Utah State UCD WebAim evaluation program (webaim.org), and proposition of an accessibility policy. The importance of a proactive and manageable accessibility policy included a specific timeline for compliance of both legacy and future digital content. Read more...
