AUCD signed onto a letter from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights urging members of Congress to oppose H.J. Res. 57 and support continued implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). H.J Res. 57 is a measure that would remove an education rule that sets guidelines for state assessment of schools. Removal of the rule, which was instituted by the Obama Administration, would create uncertainty surrounding the implementation of ESSA and would invalidate standards on how states rate schools and how to deal with parents who remove their children from testing. The measure is part of a broader attempt to to overturn ESSA regulations, many of which provide vital protections for historically marginalized groups of students, including students with disabilities, students of color, English learners, Native Americans, LBTQ, immigrants, girls and those from low-income households. Stripping these regulations would deprive these students of critical civil rights and weaken the ability of advocates, families and educators to have their voices heard during the implementation of ESSA.
