Four UCEDDs (TN, TX, MN, KY) Collaborate to Put Faith and Jobseekers with Disabilities to Work
A new manual outlines how faith communities can support members with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. The manual was spearheaded by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD) and its partners at the Human Development Institute (KY UCEDD), the Texas Center for Disability Studies (TX UCEDD), and the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD). Report: Indiana Teacher Evaluations Bring Positive Change, But Improvement Needed (IN UCEDD)
Indiana should make changes in its teacher evaluation system to provide more clarity and consistency for schools and stronger support for and engagement by educators, according to a white paper released today by an Indiana University research center. The paper contains recommendations for the Indiana General Assembly, which begins its 2017 session in January. They include revising the teacher evaluation law to put more focus on new teachers; giving districts more flexibility in how they compensate teachers; and rewriting the criteria for Teacher Performance Grants to focus on student growth, not performance. Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TX UCEDD)
The Behavior Support Collaborative lead by Dr. Mack D. Burke in conjunction with the Center on Disability and Development in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University was awarded a catapult grant from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The purpose of the catapult grant (Improving Quality of Life Through a Culturally Responsive Lens: Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students At-Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders) is to improve the quality of life and well-being of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds who are at-risk of developing emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) by promoting school adjustment. Our Role in Early Identification (CO UCEDD/LEND)
We all know that early intervention plays a critical role in helping children with developmental delays achieve their maximum potential. But many are not identified before they enter kindergarten. Clearly, we have far to go toward building a universal system of early and regular developmental/behavioral screening. What can we, as audiologists and speech-language pathologists, do to increase early identification and timely referral to early intervention (EI) programs-especially given the prevalence of communication delays in very young children? UI Earns No. 1 Ranking in University Website Accessibility (IA UCEDD)
The University of Iowa ranks first in the nation in an assessment of how accessible its websites are to people with disabilities. UI topped the list of 140 American universities, according to rankings presented at an Educause conference poster session by Jon Gunderson of the Division of Disability Resources and Education Services at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. Speech-Language Pathologist Screening of Sleep Problem Grant Awarded to Rose F. Kennedy Center (NY UCEDD/LEND)
FThis grant will pilot sleep problem screening by SLPs, using validated tools for sleep-disordered breathing and behavioral (insomnia-type) sleep problems. Focus groups will assess SLP and family experiences; screening tools will yield sleep problem prevalence. This grant, from the American Sleep Medicine Foundation, will be led by UCEDD Co-Director Karen Bonuck, PhD and Supervisor of Speech-Language Services, Nancy Tarshis, MA, MS. CCC-SLP. Read more...
RFK CERC Holiday Party (NY UCEDD/LEND)
RFK UCEDD and LEND in the Bronx celebrated its annual Holiday Party with individuals and families served at RFK Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC) at Monterfiore. It was an awesome experience for everyone - participants, volunteers, and staff!
