Arkansas
As the new Nutrition Ambassador transitions into her work, the Cooking Matters curriculum continues to be adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities with the help of wonderful partners including AR Hunger Relief Alliance and the Arkansas Disability and Health Program. A Cooking Matters demo class will be held by the AR Hunger Relief Alliance for the Parent Advisory Council on January 20, 2017.

Louisiana
The Louisiana Nutrition Ambassador has continued to facilitate partnerships between the Metropolitan Human Services District, Families Helping Families, and Mia's Educational Employment Agency to begin offering Cooking Matters courses in the regions or Orleans Parish, Jefferson Parish, and Rapides Parish. Six Deputy Ambassadors from these three regions have been identified and trained on the Cooking Matters curriculum. The Louisiana Nutrition Ambassador continues to grow partnerships so Cooking Matters classes can be brought to more parts of Louisiana.

Oklahoma

Five Deputy Ambassadors have been identified in Oklahoma. Check out the bios of two of the awesome deputy ambassadors here:

Yvonne Lira: I am a mom who has a child with Autism. He was diagnosed when he was 2 1/2 years old. We have had many challenges in the way we eat because of the associated sensory disorders and the fear of trying new foods because of the texture, shape, color, appearance or smell. The biggest motivation to be a part of this project was when a friend said, "I have tried to help other families, and I forgot to concentrate on my own son." This is why I wanted to be part of this project. I saw this as an opportunity to help others in similar situations, but also, in order to love and care for someone we love, we have to help and care for ourselves. Yvonne is a leader for the Oklahoma City Autism Latino support group.

Caty Serrano: I was born in Mexico City and moved to the United States in 2001 in order to get away from domestic violence. I lived in a shelter for battered women in El Paso, TX. I received a scholarship to obtain my GED, and moved to Oklahoma City in 2002. I have always had a passion to help and serve others, especially those who have been abused in domestic violence. I have volunteered for several organizations; such as, Latino Community Development Agency, churches, Skyline Urban Ministry, Love OKC, Habitat for Humanity, Wonderfully Made Foundation, and Educare. In 2001, I was invited to found the 1st Congress of Latina Women, then decided to start my own foundation, Forum of Latin Women in Oklahoma (ForMuLaOK) Foundation in order to assist anyone in a domestic violence crisis. We assist with translators in court, provide advice, counseling, mentoring, and assistance with food and clothing. We have hosted several events: Celebrating the International Day of Women, Month of Non-Violence Against Women or Gender-Based Violence and You Decide aimed to empower women to make the best decisions for their lives. I am also a mother of 5 children, ages 25, 16, 9, 8, and 6. My youngest son was diagnosed with Autism when he was 4. I have been married to my husband, Ariel Salazer, for 1 year. Together, we are parent mentors to other families who have children with autism.

Tennessee
The Nutrition Ambassador continues to talk with partners and build relationships as it begins to build out the Nutrition is for Everyone program. Two educational training presentations are scheduled for October and November and a series of four 1-hour curriculum presentations are being developed to be used as a series of trainings for individuals or act as a standalone training. Make sure to check out the Nutrition is for Everyone Tennessee's new Facebook page to view current information and healthy recipes.

The Power of the Wellness Committee

It represents the opinions, thoughts, and ideas of staff and people who support you and can bridge gaps within the community.
