AUCD Celebrates October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (#NDEAM), sponsored by the Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy. This is the 71st anniversary of the first #NDEAM, started just as World War II was ending. This year the theme for #NDEAM is #InclusionWorks, highlighting the role that disability has in diverse workplaces and the contributions made to businesses by people with disabilities. Read more...

AUCD Welcomes Christine Liao as MCH Program Specialist
Christine Liao is a Program Specialist for AUCD's Maternal and Child Health technical assistance team. Her role is to engage and promote leadership among trainees and early career professionals. Christine also provides support to the UCEDD's technical assistance team. Coming to AUCD, Christine brings a diverse range of experiences. She has worked with people with disabilities from different backgrounds and cultures in a mental health, academic, health care and community settings. Many of her past projects were innovating programs to address gaps in the community. Her passions include intersectionality, language accessibility and inclusion. Read more...

Access Press Honors MN UCEDD Staffer Cliff Poetz Access Press, Minnesota's disability newspaper, has named Cliff Poetz as the Charlie Smith Award recipient for 2016. Poetz, a community liaison at the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD) Research and Training Center on Community Living, will be the guest of honor at the annual banquet on November 4, when the award will be presented. TRIAD's Pablo Juárez, Receiving National Honor from The Arc for Supporting Inclusion for People with Disabilities (TN UCEDD/LEND/IDDRC)
Pablo Juárez, M.Ed., BCBA, director of the Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) in the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, has been named Educator of the Year by The Arc, the nation's largest national community-based organization advocating for and serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Cassie Hicks with MS UCEDD Named Member of Inaugural National HUD Housing Committee
Cassie Hicks, director of Housing at The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies (IDS), has been named as one of 12 members of the inaugural Housing Counseling Federal Advisory Committee. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) organized the committee as a result of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. The advisory panel will work with HUD's Office of Housing Counseling to improve efforts to provide consumers with the knowledge they need to make informed housing decisions. Read more...

Angela Tomlin, PhD joins Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (MN UCEDD/LEND)
As one of only 15 three-person teams selected, Angela Tomlin, PhD, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at IUSM and Director of the Section of Child Development and the Indiana LEND program joins Interdisciplinary Research Leaders, a new program led by the University of Minnesota with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Tomlin is partnering with Shoshanna Spector, Executive Director of Indianapolis Congregation Action Network (IndyCAN!) and Karen Ruprecht, PhD, Director of Innovation in Early Education at Early Learning Indiana to form a team that will examine the effects of parental incarceration on young children. Kennedy Krieger Institute's Maureen van Stone Receives Academies Appointment (MD UCDD/LEND)
The Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the Academies) has appointed Maureen van Stone of Kennedy Krieger Institute to its Committee on Improving Health Outcomes in Children with Disabilities. Ms. van Stone joins a diverse group of experts who will produce a comprehensive report on federal, state, and local programs, services and supports available to school-age children with disabilities and their families. Maureen van Stone is the associate director of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute and the director of Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law), a MCDD community-based program. Enabling Community Participation in the Bronx (NY UCEDD/LEND)
RFK CERC Einstein/Montefoire UCEDD occupational and physical therapists, LEND trainees, children with developmental disabilities and their families happily joined together to visit epic sites in the Bronx. Tim Conly, OTR cultivated new partnerships with Yankee Stadium and Mosholu Golf Course this summer so that CERC families could tour the iconic baseball stadium and learn to play golf. Therapists and therapy LEND trainees created the optimal experience for participants: enhancing abilities and modifying the environment so each person obtained the maximal benefit during the visits. For many it was the first time to Yankee Stadium, participants were so grateful that one child presented a beautiful picture he made to our tour guide, Paul Ward, creating a lasting partnership. For all, this was the first time on the golf course; golf pros taught us to drive, putt and play a hole. Read more...

First MS Self-Advocacy Fellow Begins in MS-AR LEND Partnership Program
Robert "Taylor" Carley recently began his training year as the first self-advocacy fellow in the Institute for Disability Studies' (IDS) Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental (and Related) Disabilities (LEND) program in Mississippi. Oregon Health & Science University Join the Nation's Largest Autism Study (OR UCEDD)
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is one of the 21 project sites selected to be involved in this effort. Specifically, over the next three years, OHSU will recruit 2,600 individuals with a professional diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and when possible, their biological parents. Over the past two months, our OHSU SPARK team has been working in conjunction with the OHSU University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) network. OHSU's UCEDD interim director, Rhonda Eppelsheimer, has been acting as a liaison between the OHSU SPARK team and UCEDD centers in ten US states and territories, including Montana, North and South Dakota, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, and American Samoa. The support from the UCEDD network has been phenomenal, and has assisted tremendously in the success of our recruitment efforts thus far. Out of the 21 SPARK project sites, OHSU currently ranks third in recruitment, thanks in no small part to the UCEDD network. Read more...

Maine UCEDD CAC Members Share Lived History of Disability with LEND Trainees
Two members of the Maine UCEDD's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) recently shared their lived history of disability with University of Maine trainees and faculty in the New Hampshire-Maine LEND Program, as part of a Leadership Intensive on the history of disability. In lieu of the weekly two-state LEND seminar, trainees and faculty in NH and ME simultaneously, but separately, explored the trajectory of the disability movement in their respective states and nationally. Dr. Blake Works To Give Others A Voice While Keeping Her Own (TX UCEDD)
Being a single mom is difficult, but throw in a full-time research position at a tier one research university and the difficulty level increases significantly. Just ask Dr. Jamilia Blake, associate professor of school psychology. Dr. Blake has been part of the Texas A&M family since 2007. She has won numerous awards in both teaching and research and has taken part in more than a dozen publications related to ethnically diverse youth and peer-directed aggression, bullying and victimization in socially marginalized populations. Family Behind "When Sean Speaks" Gives Back to the Center on Disability and Development (TX UCEDD)
Sean Carter has become an important Texas voice in the fight against drunk driving. When Sean was attending school at North Texas, he climbed into the passenger seat of a car being driven by a drunk driver. On the drive home, the car spun out of control and slammed into a tree. He was rushed to the hospital and declared paralyzed. Sean's mother was told that he had Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and to "hope for the best." Over the years, Sean slowly began to make progress and can now communicate through assistive technology. Presently, he uses his computer to speak to other young people across Texas about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving. Sean's message has reached tens of thousands of young Texans and he and his family continue to spread his message and raise money for TBI research through his nonprofit organization "When Sean Speaks. WIHD is pleased to welcome the new 2016-2017 LEND class. The new LEND class represents a numbers of disciplines: Advocacy, Audiology, Family Specialist, Genetics, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Public Administration, Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, Special Education and Speech Language Pathology. New Iowa LEND Trainees have a Capital Time at the Iowa State Capitol
The ILEND trainees have been going to the state capitol as part of their Orientation for the past four years. The trip provides an opportunity for the students to bond with their ILEND cohort, which helps create an open and engaged environment for the program's biweekly seminars and serves as a prelude to the state and federal policy instruction that is a key component of the ILEND leadership education. Nisonger Center's 50th Anniversary!
The Ohio State University Nisonger Center was founded in 1966; among the first group of federally-funded University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. The Center was named after Herschel W. Nisonger, a long-time faculty member at Ohio State, a national leader in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities and past president of the American Association on Mental Retardation from 1960-1961. Nisonger Center will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on October 15, 2016 with many special guests including Andrew J. Imparato. Read more...
American Samoa DD Network to Host 4th Gubernatorial Forum on Disability and Aging
American Samoa DD Network in collaboration with the Advocates for Inclusion and Governance for All (AIGA, meaning Family) is hosting its 4th Gubernatorial Forum on October 24, 2016 at the Gov. Rex Lee Auditorium in American Samoa. Various disability issues in special education, employment, healthcare, entitlements, and community inclusion will be a highlighted. Taking the lead in sharing their stories and asking questions to the candidates are self-advocates of the AIGA and Parents of Children with Special Needs (PCSN) Network. A new partner to the advocacy network is the Toe Afua Mai Matua (TAMM, meaning Restoration Through Our Elders) that expressed interest to have an hour session with the candidates.
