28 state legislatures have passed resolutions in support of a Constitutional Convention to rewrite the U.S. Constitution to pass a balanced budget amendment. Such a move would restrict federal spending by $8 trillion in the first decade of its implementation and would require devastating cuts to a diverse array of important programs. These include $2.3 trillion in cuts to Social Security, $1.5 trillion in cuts to Medicare, $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid as well as massive cuts across all other policy areas. Only six more states must pass resolutions in support of a Constitutional Convention for one to take place. Such an occurrence would be the only time a convention has been held since the U.S. Constitution was written and could potentially result in many other amendments.
