OH LEND Students Present Research Outcomes in Joint Poster Symposium

On April 7, the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati (UC) joined with the Ohio State University (OSU) Nisonger Center LEND to host a joint poster symposium for graduating trainees. This 5th annual event offered trainees, faculty, staff and community members - including Jonathan Dever (R), State Representative for the 28th district of the Ohio House of Representatives - the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics impacting Ohioans with disabilities including health insurance coverage, transition to adult healthcare, and community inclusion. Representative Dever cosponsored The Ohio ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Act in the House of Representatives.
The event kicked off with a keynote on leadership by Dr. Patricia M. Manning-Courtney, a former LEND trainee, who is now co-director of the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's. Dr. Manning-Courtney's inspiration and encouragement was followed by an overview of the two participating LEND programs. Dr. Karen Ratliff-Schaub of Nisonger LEND and Dr. Jennifer Smith of Cincinnati LEND articulated the unique ways that each program leverages their local resources to shape trainees from diverse disciplines into leaders in research, clinical practice and policy.
However, the focus of the day was the trainee poster presentations. A few posters from each center were selected for oral presentation to the whole audience. Then over lunch, participants perused the remaining posters voting on the most innovative project and most visually appealing poster.

In the afternoon, presenters and audience members alike were challenged by topics brought up in the panel conversation on diversity and inclusion. It was clear from conversations throughout the day that both programs benefitted from sharing their activities with peers and learning from one another about challenges being addressed in other areas of their state. Congratulations to all LEND trainees in the 2015-16 Cohort on the successful completion of their projects.
