AUCD signed onto a CCD letter of support for the Stop Taxing Death and Disability Act of 2016. The bill removes a tax penalty imposed on families whose student loans are forgiven due to the death or permanent disability of their child. Since loan forgiveness qualifies as taxable income, many families whose children develop a permanent disability or die are currently taxed on those loans. The letter is addressed to Senator Angus King (I-ME), who introduced the legislation along with Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE).
