April 18, 2016

Shelbi Davenport and Justin Deleon both valedictorians from their prospective PATHS program classes are candidates to become the first People Planning Together (PPT) certified trainers in Texas. The People Planning Together curriculum was developed by The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, an International organization that provides certification programs in an effort to offer training to people with a broad range of support needs. The Institute on Person Centered Practices which is a collaborative partnership between the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and the Center on Disability Studies at The University of Texas is providing the Mentor services and supports to training Justin and Shelbi. The Institute is a regional affiliate of The Learning Community that provides training for professionals, educators, managed care organizations, providers of services, family members and people with disabilities. PPT is tailored specifically to support people with disabilities to develop person centered plans.

The People Planning Together training is led by certified trainers with disabilities for audiences that include people with disabilities. This two day peer to peer training model provides learners with hands on opportunities to discover how they want to live their lives as they define it and to develop person centered plans that reflect the goals the person chooses to pursue. This is a powerful training that is centered in the principles of self-determination, the dignity of risk and discovery. Justin and Shelbi reflect the outcomes of the training through the lives they live as successful advocates and teachers.
