People On the Go (MD UCEDD)

People On the Go is Maryland's self-advocacy group of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities around the state who advocate for change. People On the Go members have come together for years to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities influence services, policies, and practices. They are also engaged in a number of training projects at the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute through funding from both the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

People On the Go highlights include: 

  • Working with self-advocates to provide self-advocacy training, especially on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, to increase self-advocacy engagement and skills. (Funded by the DD Council);
  • Statewide self-advocacy training using the Project STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) Curriculum (Funded by DDA);
  • Partnering with Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) to provide voter training and awareness for persons with disabilities in Maryland;
  • Educating legislators to pass the Ken Capone Equal Employment Act (HB420/SB417), which passed the Senate and the House during the 2016 Maryland General Assembly legislative session;
  • Testifying in Annapolis on HB 976/SB704, HB371, HB1499,HB431/SB355, HB644, SB818;
  • Sitting on various committees at the state level: Chairman Quality Advisory Council (Ken Capone)and the State Transition Services Waiver Workgroup (Ken Capone);
  • Public Policy Coordinator, Ken Capone is a member of the National President Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID);
  • Ken Capone speaking at the FCC about the Present Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities on Assistive Technology;
  • Public Policy Advocate, Mat Rice, chairing the Equal Employment Coalition made up of state and national advocacy organizations to eliminate 14c in MD, bringing together state agencies DDA, Maryland Department of Disabilities, and Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation to agree on moving the state forward; 
  • Ken Capone and Mat Rice sitting on the policy and goals committee for the State Employment First Leadership; and - POG Statewide Self-Advocacy conference in September 2016.
